📋 Before You Begin

- 🔑 Turn the ignition fully off and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
- ⏱️ Wait at least 2 minutes after turning the vehicle off before disconnecting the battery.
- 🔋 Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- 💡 A MAF sensor is the small electronic sensor installed in the air intake tube between the air filter box and the engine.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Find the air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay.
- Follow the plastic intake tube from the air filter box toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is mounted on the intake tube with an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves while working around the engine bay.
Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- Wiggle the connector, not the wires.
Step 3: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
- Keep the screws in a small tray or safe place.
- If the screws feel stuck, press the screwdriver firmly into the screw head before turning to avoid stripping it.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Gently pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube.
- If it sticks, lightly twist it by hand while pulling upward.
- Do not pry against the plastic intake tube with a screwdriver.
- Check that the old O-ring or seal came out with the sensor.
Step 5: Inspect the Intake Opening
- Use a clean nitrile-gloved finger to check the MAF sensor opening for loose dirt or debris.
- Do not push dirt into the intake tube.
- If needed, use mass air flow sensor cleaner on the sensor area only, then let it air dry fully.
- Do not use compressed air directly on the MAF sensing element.
Step 6: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Confirm the new MAF sensor has a clean O-ring or seal installed.
- Insert the sensor straight into the intake tube in the same direction as the old one.
- Make sure it sits flat against the intake tube.
- Start both screws by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
Step 7: Tighten the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to snug the two screws evenly.
- If using an inch-pound torque screwdriver, tighten the screws to Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The intake tube is plastic and can crack.
- Snug is enough on plastic parts.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the MAF sensor until it clicks.
- Use your fingers to gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the negative terminal clamp.
- Tighten until the terminal does not rotate by hand.
- If using a torque wrench setup, tighten the battery terminal to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
Step 10: Start and Check Operation
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Listen for hissing sounds near the intake tube, which can indicate an air leak.
- Check that the engine idles smoothly.
- If the check engine light was on before, it may need several drive cycles or a scan tool to clear after the repair.

- ✅ Test drive your CX-5 for 10-15 minutes with gentle acceleration first.
- ✅ Make sure there is no hesitation, rough idle, stalling, or check engine light.
- ✅ Recheck the MAF connector after the test drive to make sure it is fully seated.
