🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Stand at the front of your Odyssey and look at the air filter box on the driver-side area of the engine bay.
- Find the plastic intake tube between the air filter box and the engine throttle body.
- The MAF sensor is the small sensor installed into that intake tube or air cleaner outlet with an electrical connector attached.
- Tip: Follow the air filter box outlet.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it so it cannot spring back onto the post.
- Do not let the tool touch the positive battery terminal while loosening the negative cable.
Step 3: Unplug the MAF Sensor Connector
- Press the locking tab on the MAF sensor electrical connector with your thumb.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to lift the lock while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
- Tip: Gentle pressure prevents broken tabs.
Step 4: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two MAF sensor retaining screws.
- Keep the screws in a safe place if the new sensor does not include new screws.
- Lift the MAF sensor straight out of the intake housing.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it by hand. Do not pry against the sensor body.
Step 5: Inspect the Mounting Area
- Look inside the sensor opening and make sure no dirt, broken plastic, or old O-ring pieces are present.

- Make sure the new MAF sensor O-ring seal is seated evenly on the sensor.
- Insert the new MAF sensor straight into the intake housing.
- Line up the screw holes by hand. The sensor should sit flat without force.
- Start both screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
Step 7: Tighten the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use an inch-pound torque screwdriver with the correct bit position to tighten the screws evenly.
- Torque to 2.0 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- If you do not have a torque screwdriver, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten only until snug.
- Do not overtighten. The intake housing is plastic and can crack.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the MAF sensor connector straight onto the sensor until it clicks.
- Use your fingers to gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
- Make sure the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or resting against hot engine parts.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal nut.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- The terminal should not rotate by hand after tightening.
Step 10: Start the Engine
- Start your Odyssey and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Listen for hissing near the intake tube, which can mean an air leak.
- If the idle is slightly uneven at first, allow the engine computer a few minutes to relearn airflow.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver only if needed to reposition any loose intake duct clips nearby.
