🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Open the hood and stand at the front of your Accord.
- Find the air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay.
- The MAF sensor is installed in the plastic intake tube near the air filter box and has an electrical connector attached to it.
- Use a flashlight if needed to clearly see the connector and mounting screws.
- Take a photo first.
Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the lock while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
Step 3: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two small screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
- Keep one hand near the screws as you remove them so they do not fall into the engine bay.
- Place the screws in a small tray or safe spot.
- If using a socket-style bit with a torque screwdriver, loosen carefully to avoid stripping the screw heads.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Gently pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube by hand.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle it slightly side to side while pulling upward.
- Do not pry hard with a screwdriver because the plastic intake tube can crack.
- Check that the old sealing ring came out with the old sensor.
Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Compare the new MAF sensor to the old one to make sure the shape and connector match.
- Insert the new sensor straight into the intake tube by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat against the mounting surface.
- Install the two screws by hand first so they do not cross-thread. Cross-threading means the screw starts crooked and damages the threads.
Step 6: Tighten the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a torque screwdriver inch-pound scale to tighten both MAF sensor screws evenly.
- Torque to 1.5-2.0 Nm (13-18 in-lbs)
- If you do not have a torque screwdriver, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten only until snug.
- Do not overtighten. These screws thread into plastic and can strip easily.
- Snug is enough.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the new MAF sensor by hand.
- Listen and feel for a click from the locking tab.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 8: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Make sure the cable does not rotate by hand after tightening.
Step 9: Clear Codes and Start the Engine
- Plug the OBD2 scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver-side dashboard.
- Turn the ignition on without pressing the brake pedal, then follow the scan tool menu to clear stored engine codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 3-5 minutes without pressing the accelerator.
- The idle may fluctuate briefly while the engine computer relearns airflow readings.
