🔧 CR-V - Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement

The mass air flow sensor measures how much air enters the engine so the engine computer can calculate the correct fuel amount. On your CR-V, replacing it is a beginner-friendly job because the sensor is mounted on the air intake tube and is easy to access.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the intake and turbo-area plumbing.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF sensor. It is delicate and can be damaged by fingers, cloth, or compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the negative battery cable is recommended to prevent accidental short circuits and to help the engine computer relearn cleanly.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt, leaves, and dropped screws out of the air intake tube. Anything entering the intake can damage the turbocharger or engine.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the ignition fully OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes if it was recently driven.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable. A negative battery cable is the black cable connected to the battery’s minus terminal.
  • 📌 Assumption: this procedure is for the factory-style MAF sensor mounted in the air intake tube on the 1.5L turbo engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the MAF sensor

  • Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it with the hood support if needed.
  • Find the air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay.
  • The MAF sensor is installed in the black air intake tube near the air filter box. It has a small electrical connector plugged into it.
  • Take a phone photo first.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative battery cable

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
  • No torque is needed for removal.

Step 3: Unplug the MAF sensor electrical connector

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector with your finger.
  • If the connector is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help lift the lock tab while pulling the connector straight back.
  • Do not pull on the wires. Pull on the plastic connector body only.

Step 4: Remove the MAF sensor screws

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two small screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
  • Keep the screws in a safe place. They are small and easy to drop.
  • If your replacement sensor includes new screws, compare them with the originals before installing.

Step 5: Remove the old MAF sensor

  • Gently lift the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube by hand.
  • Do not twist hard or pry against the plastic intake tube.
  • Check that the old sensor seal or O-ring came out with the sensor. An O-ring is a small rubber sealing ring that prevents air leaks.

Step 6: Install the new MAF sensor

  • Carefully place the new mass air flow sensor into the intake tube in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the sensor sits flat and the seal is not pinched.
  • Start both screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the screw is going in crooked and damaging the threads.

Step 7: Tighten the MAF sensor screws

  • Use an inch-pound torque screwdriver to tighten the two MAF sensor screws evenly.
  • Torque to 1.5 Nm (13 in-lbs).
  • If you do not have a torque screwdriver, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten only until snug. Do not overtighten because the intake tube is plastic.
  • Snug means seated, not forced.

Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the new MAF sensor by hand.
  • Listen and feel for a click from the locking tab.
  • Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked in place.

Step 9: Reconnect the battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery’s negative post.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The battery terminal can crack.

Step 10: Start the engine and check your work

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Watch for a steady idle. A steady idle means the engine speed is not jumping up and down.
  • Use your eyes and hands to confirm the intake tube area is fully seated and the connector is secure.
  • If the engine stalls, runs very rough, or the Check Engine light flashes, turn the engine off and recheck the connector and sensor seating.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Drive gently for 10-15 minutes so the engine computer can relearn airflow readings.
  • ✅ If the Check Engine light was already on, it may take several drive cycles to turn off after the fault is fixed.
  • ✅ If you have a scan tool, clear any stored MAF-related codes after installation. A scan tool is a small device that plugs into the diagnostic port to read and erase vehicle trouble codes.
  • ✅ Recheck the MAF connector after the test drive to make sure it is still fully locked.
  • ✅ If idle problems remain, inspect the air filter box and intake tube for loose clamps, cracks, or air leaks.
