🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Open the hood and look at the air intake duct near the air cleaner box on your Civic.
- The MAF sensor is the small plastic sensor mounted into the intake tube with an electrical connector attached.
- Take a phone photo first.
Step 2: Unplug the Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the connector release tab and pull the connector straight off the MAF sensor.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently lift the lock while pulling the connector back.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
Step 3: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two small MAF sensor retaining screws.
- If your replacement hardware uses hex-head screws, use a 1/4-inch drive ratchet with an 8mm socket.
- Place the screws somewhere safe so they cannot fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Gently twist the sensor by hand and pull it straight out of the intake tube.
- If the O-ring seal sticks, remove it carefully by hand. Do not let it fall into the intake.
- Check that the sensor opening is clean and free of dirt.
Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Compare the new mass air flow sensor to the old one. The connector shape and mounting holes should match.
- Install the new MAF sensor O-ring seal on the sensor if it is not already installed.
- Slide the new sensor straight into the intake tube by hand. Do not force it.
- Make sure the sensor sits flat against the intake tube.
Step 6: Tighten the Sensor Screws
- Start both screws by hand first so they do not cross-thread.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to snug the screws evenly.
- Use an inch-pound torque wrench if the screw head allows proper torqueing.
- Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
- Small screws strip easily.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the new MAF sensor by hand until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked in place.
- Make sure the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or touching hot engine parts.
Step 8: Clear Codes and Check Data
- Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver-side lower dash.
- Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear stored engine codes if the check engine light was on.
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
