🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Open the hood and find the air-filter box on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
- Follow the large intake duct toward the engine. The electrical sensor mounted in that airflow path is the MAF sensor.
- Use the flashlight from your phone if the connector lock is difficult to see.
Step 2: Inspect the Connector
- Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Check whether the electrical plug has a colored secondary lock. This is a small safety tab that prevents accidental disconnection.
- If fitted, gently slide the secondary lock outward with the plastic trim tool. Do not pry it completely off.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Plug
- Press the connector release and pull the plug straight away from the sensor.
- Hold the connector body, not the wires.
- Inspect the terminals for moisture, corrosion, bent pins, or oil contamination.
- Never force a stubborn connector.
Step 4: Remove the Old Sensor
- Use the Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the MAF mounting screws.
- Keep downward pressure on the driver so the Torx heads do not strip.
- Lift the sensor straight out while noting which direction its airflow arrow or sensing opening faces.
- Place the removed sensor on the clean microfiber cloth.
Step 5: Inspect the Intake Opening
- Use the flashlight to inspect the mounting opening and sealing surface.
- Remove loose dust from the outer sealing surface with the clean microfiber cloth.
- Do not push dirt into the intake, and do not wipe inside the sensor passage.
- Inspect the intake duct for splits or loose clamps. Unmetered air entering after the MAF can cause the same symptoms as a failed sensor. That little crack can impersonate an expensive part surprisingly well.
Step 6: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Hold the new sensor by its plastic body. Do not touch the sensing elements.
- Match its orientation to the original sensor and lower it squarely into the opening.
- Make sure the seal sits flat and the sensor is fully seated without forcing it.
- Start both screws by hand before using a tool.
Step 7: Tighten the Mounting Screws
- Use the Torx T20 torque bit and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the screws evenly.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
- Stop if the sensor flange begins bending. These screws only retain a small plastic sensor, so tighter isn't better.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Plug
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the sensor until the release tab clicks.
- Re-engage the secondary lock with the plastic trim tool, if fitted.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 9: Clear Stored Trouble Codes
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port beneath the driver's side dashboard.
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the scan tool's erase-code function to clear related stored codes.
- Switch the ignition off for approximately 30 seconds, then disconnect the scan tool.
- If you don't have a scan tool, the warning light may turn off after several successful drive cycles if no fault remains.

- ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for three to five minutes without pressing the accelerator.
- ✅ A slightly uneven idle for a few moments can occur while airflow corrections stabilize.
