📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor

• Open the hood and stand at the front of your Highlander.
• Find the air filter box on the driver-side area of the engine bay.
• Follow the black plastic intake tube leaving the air filter box toward the engine.
• The MAF sensor is the small sensor with an electrical connector attached to that intake tube.
• Take a photo before unplugging anything.

Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Press the release tab on the MAF sensor connector with your thumb.
• If the tab is stuck, gently use a small flathead screwdriver to lift the locking tab while pulling the connector straight back.
• Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.

Step 3: Remove the Old MAF Sensor

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two MAF sensor mounting screws.
• Set the screws in a safe place so they do not fall into the engine bay.
• Gently twist the MAF sensor a few degrees while pulling it straight out of the intake tube.
• If the rubber seal sticks, wiggle the sensor gently. Do not pry hard against the plastic intake tube.

Step 4: Compare the Old and New Sensor

• Hold the old and new MAF sensors side by side.
• Make sure the mounting holes, connector shape, sensor length, and seal location match.
• Use your fingers to confirm the new O-ring or seal is seated evenly on the new sensor.
• Do not touch the tiny sensing elements inside the sensor opening.

Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor

• Slide the new MAF sensor straight into the intake tube opening.
• Make sure it sits flat against the intake tube and is not tilted.
• Install the two screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the screw starts crooked and damages the threads.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to snug both screws evenly.
• If using an inch-pound torque screwdriver, Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
• Snug is enough; do not overtighten plastic.

Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

• Push the electrical connector straight onto the new MAF sensor until it clicks.
• Gently tug the connector body by hand to confirm it is locked in place.
• Make sure the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or touching moving engine parts.

Step 7: Reconnect the Battery

• Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
• Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the cable nut until secure.
• Do not overtighten the battery terminal. It only needs to be tight enough that it cannot rotate by hand.

Step 8: Start and Check Operation

• Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
• Listen for rough idle, whistling, or hissing near the intake tube.
• If you hear a hiss, shut the engine off and check that the MAF sensor seal is seated flat.
• The idle may be slightly uneven for a short time while the engine computer relearns airflow.

• ✅ Drive your Highlander normally for 10-15 minutes so the engine computer can relearn airflow readings.
• ✅ If the check engine light was on before the repair, it may turn off after several drive cycles if the fault is corrected.
