📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Highlander on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
• Switch off the ignition and all electrical accessories.
• Open the hood and locate the MAF sensor on top of the air-cleaner outlet, near the large intake hose.
• If a warning light is present, connect the OBD-II scan tool and record the stored codes before removing anything.
• Compare the old and new sensors. Their connector, mounting holes, sealing ring, and airflow orientation must match.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Inspect the MAF Sensor Area

• Use the LED inspection flashlight to check for dirt, damaged wiring, or a loose intake hose around the sensor.
• Make sure nothing can fall into the open air passage after the sensor is removed.

Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

• Wear nitrile mechanic gloves and press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector with your fingers.
• Pull the connector straight back while holding its plastic body. Do not pull on the wires.
• Use the LED inspection flashlight to inspect the terminals for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

Step 3: Remove the Old MAF Sensor

• Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to loosen and remove the two sensor retaining screws.
• Place the screws somewhere clean and secure.
• Lift the sensor straight out by its plastic body. Do not twist it against the air-cleaner housing.
• Confirm that the old sealing O-ring came out with the sensor.

Step 4: Prepare the New Sensor

• Use the LED inspection flashlight to verify that the new sealing O-ring is properly seated and undamaged.
• Hold the sensor only by its plastic exterior. The sensing element is the delicate part located inside the airflow opening.
• Align the new sensor in the same direction as the original. The mounting holes prevent correct installation in the wrong position.

Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor

• Lower the sensor straight into the air-cleaner housing without forcing it.
• Start both retaining screws by hand, then turn them lightly with the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
• Use the torque screwdriver with Phillips #2 bit to tighten both screws evenly to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
• Do not overtighten the screws; the plastic housing can crack. Stop as soon as specified torque is reached.

Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

• Use your gloved hand to push the electrical connector straight onto the new sensor.
• Continue until the locking tab clicks.
• Pull gently on the connector body to verify that it is locked.

Step 7: Clear Diagnostic Codes

• Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port beneath the driver-side dashboard.
• Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
• Use the OBD-II scan tool to select Engine Control Module > Read Codes and save any results.
• After confirming installation, select Engine Control Module > Clear Codes.
• Switch the ignition off and disconnect the OBD-II scan tool.

• Start the engine and let it idle for approximately five minutes. A slightly uneven idle may occur briefly while airflow corrections readjust.
• Listen for a hissing sound that could indicate an intake-air leak.
• Confirm that the check-engine light remains off.

• Reconnect the OBD-II scan tool and confirm that no MAF-related codes return, particularly P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, or P0104.
• If a code immediately returns, inspect the connector, wiring, air-filter housing, intake hose, and vacuum system before replacing additional parts.
