🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate and inspect the MAF sensor
- Wear safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves, then open the hood.
- Use an LED work light to locate the electrical sensor where the air exits the air-filter housing.
- Inspect the connector and wiring for broken insulation, corrosion, or loose terminals. Wiring damage can imitate a failed sensor.
Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Press the connector’s locking tab with your fingers and pull the connector straight away from the sensor.
- Pull on the connector body, not the wires.
- If the connector has a secondary locking tab, slide that tab back before pressing the main release.
- Never pry against the plastic sensor housing.
Step 3: Remove the old MAF sensor
- Use a security Torx T20 bit socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two sensor retaining screws.
- A security Torx bit has a hole in its center that fits tamper-resistant Torx screws.
- Lift the sensor straight out without twisting it against the air-cleaner housing.
- Keep the opening covered by positioning a clean gloved hand over it while preparing the replacement sensor.
Step 4: Compare the replacement sensor
- Use the LED work light to compare the connector, mounting holes, sensing probe, and seal on both sensors.
- Confirm the new seal is seated evenly and is not pinched or damaged.
- Do not touch the sensing wires or apply cleaners, oil, or grease to them.
Step 5: Install the new MAF sensor
- Insert the sensor in the same direction as the original. The connector and mounting holes should align without force.
- Start both screws by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the security Torx T20 bit socket and 1/4-inch drive inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the screws evenly to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
- Do not overtighten the screws; the plastic housing can crack.
Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the sensor by hand until the locking tab clicks.
- Engage the secondary lock by hand if the connector uses one.
- Gently pull on the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 7: Check the installation
- Use the LED work light to confirm the sensor sits flat and the seal is not visible or pinched.
- Check that no wires are trapped, stretched, or touching a hot engine component.
- Confirm the air-filter housing and intake duct are fully closed and secure.
Step 8: Clear related trouble codes
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool and clear MAF-related diagnostic trouble codes only after recording them.
- Turn the ignition off for approximately 15 seconds, then disconnect the OBD-II scan tool.

- ✅ Start the engine without pressing the accelerator and let it idle for approximately five minutes.
- 👂 Listen for hissing around the air-filter housing and intake duct, which can indicate an air leak.
- 🚗 Take a gentle 10-15 minute test drive and verify that acceleration and idle quality are normal.
- 🔍 Use the OBD-II scan tool to check for returning diagnostic trouble codes after the drive.
