📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Outback on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for a few minutes if it was recently driven.
- A MAF sensor is the small electronic sensor in the air intake tube that tells the engine computer how much air is entering the engine.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Stand at the front of your Outback and look at the air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- Find the plastic intake tube running from the air filter box toward the engine.
- The MAF sensor is mounted on top of the intake tube near the air filter box and has an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe dust from around the sensor area before removal.
- Clean area first.
Step 2: Unplug the Electrical Connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector with your thumb.
- If the tab is hard to press, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help release the lock.
- Pull the connector straight back from the sensor. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the 2 screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
- Keep the screws in a safe place. They are small and easy to drop.
- There is no high torque on these screws. They are small plastic-housing screws and should only be snug during installation.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Use your hand to lift the MAF sensor straight up and out of the intake tube.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling upward.
- Do not pry hard with a screwdriver because the plastic intake tube can crack.
- Check that the rubber sealing ring comes out with the old sensor or is present on the replacement sensor.
Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Compare the new MAF sensor with the old one to make sure the shape, connector, and mounting holes match.
- Use your hand to lower the new MAF sensor straight into the intake tube.
- Make sure it sits flat against the intake tube before installing the screws.
- Do not touch the internal sensing element. The sensing element is the tiny wire or film inside the sensor that measures airflow.
Step 6: Tighten the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the 2 screws.
- Tighten them evenly until the sensor is seated and the screws are snug.
- Torque to approximately 1-2 Nm (9-18 in-lbs) if using a low-range torque screwdriver.
- Do not overtighten. The intake tube is plastic and the screw holes can strip.
- Snug is enough.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Use your hand to push the electrical connector straight onto the MAF sensor.
- Listen or feel for a small click from the locking tab.
- Gently tug the connector body, not the wires, to confirm it is locked in place.
Step 8: Final Visual Check
- Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove any loose debris around the intake area.
- Confirm the MAF sensor is sitting flat.
- Confirm the connector is fully seated.
- Confirm no tools or rags are left in the engine bay.

- Start your Outback and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- The idle may briefly adjust while the engine computer relearns the airflow reading.
- Check that the engine runs smoothly and that there are no intake air leaks or loose connectors.
