🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Find the engine air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- The MAF sensor is mounted in the plastic intake tube just after the air filter box and has an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Use a shop towel to wipe dust from the area around the sensor.
- Keep dirt out of the intake.
Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Press the release tab on the MAF sensor electrical connector with your thumb.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help release it.
- Pull the connector straight back off the sensor. Do not pull on the wires.
- Wiggle the plug, not the wires.
Step 3: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two MAF sensor retaining screws.
- Keep the screws in a safe place so they do not fall into the engine bay.
- Pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube.
- If it feels stuck, gently rock it side to side while pulling upward by the plastic housing.
- Do not twist hard or touch the sensor element inside the tip.
Step 4: Compare the New Sensor
- Place the old and new MAF sensors side by side on a clean shop towel.
- Confirm the mounting shape, connector shape, and sensor tip length match.
- Make sure the new MAF sensor O-ring seal is installed on the new sensor.
- An O-ring is a small rubber sealing ring that prevents unmetered air from leaking past the sensor.
Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Carefully insert the new MAF sensor straight into the intake tube.
- Make sure it sits flat against the mounting surface.
- Start both screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to tighten the screws evenly.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- If you do not have an inch-pound torque wrench, tighten the screws gently until snug. Do not over-tighten.
- Small screws strip easily.
Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the new MAF sensor until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is locked.
- Check that the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or resting against hot engine parts.
Step 7: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the cable clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Make sure the cable does not rotate by hand after tightening.
Step 8: Clear Codes If Needed
- Plug an OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard.
- An OBD-II scan tool is a small device that reads and clears engine fault codes.
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear stored MAF-related codes if the check engine light was on.
- Turn the ignition off and unplug the scan tool.
