🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the MAF Sensor
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then open the hood and support it securely.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Find the air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- Look for the small sensor installed in the plastic air intake tube with an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Take a photo before unplugging anything.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it away from the post.
- This helps protect the engine computer and sensor circuit while the connector is unplugged.
Step 3: Unplug the MAF Sensor Connector
- Press the release tab on the MAF sensor electrical connector with your thumb.
- If the tab is stiff, use a trim clip removal tool gently to help depress the lock.
- Pull the connector straight back from the sensor.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- Wiggle the connector, not the wiring.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor

- Pull the sensor straight out of the intake tube.

- Compare the new MAF sensor to the old one before installation.
- Make sure the seal is seated on the new sensor.
- Insert the new sensor straight into the intake tube in the same orientation as the old sensor.
- Start both screws by hand to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the screw starts crooked and damages the plastic threads.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to tighten the screws evenly until snug.
- Torque to 2.0 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten because the intake tube is plastic.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 8: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the negative battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal nut.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
- Make sure the cable does not rotate by hand after tightening.
Step 9: Start the Engine and Let It Idle
- Start your Tacoma and let it idle for 3-5 minutes without pressing the gas pedal.
- The idle may be slightly uneven at first while the engine computer relearns airflow readings.
- Check that the engine does not stall and that the connector remains fully seated.
Step 10: Clear Codes if Needed
- If the check engine light was on before the repair, it may not turn off immediately.
