🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor

- Find the air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- The MAF sensor is mounted in the intake tube or air outlet near the air filter box and has an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dirt from around the sensor area before removing anything.
- Clean around it first.
Step 2: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector by hand.
- Pull the connector straight off the sensor without pulling on the wires.
- If the connector is tight, gently wiggle the plastic connector body by hand until it releases.
- Do not use a screwdriver to pry on the connector unless absolutely necessary, because the plastic lock can break.
Step 3: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the two MAF sensor retaining screws.
- Set the screws on a clean shop towel so they do not fall into the engine bay.
- Pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube by hand.
- If it sticks, gently rock it side to side while pulling straight out.
- Do not twist hard or touch the sensing element inside the sensor.
Step 4: Inspect the Mounting Area
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the outside of the sensor mounting area.
- Do not push dirt into the opening where the MAF sensor installs.
- Check that the old MAF sensor seal or O-ring came out with the sensor.
- If the old seal stayed in the intake tube, remove it by hand carefully.
Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Compare the new MAF sensor with the old one to confirm the shape and connector match.
- Make sure the new MAF sensor seal or O-ring is seated correctly on the sensor.
- Slide the new MAF sensor straight into the intake tube by hand.
- Use the Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall the two retaining screws.
- Tighten the screws snugly by hand only; these are small screws in plastic and can strip easily.
- Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs) if using a small inch-pound torque driver.
- Snug, not tight.
Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the new MAF sensor by hand until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector body by hand to confirm it is locked in place.
- Make sure the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or touching hot engine parts.
Step 7: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the negative battery cable clamp.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 8: Clear Codes and Start the Engine
- Plug the OBD2 scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear stored engine codes if the check engine light was on.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Listen for hissing sounds near the intake tube, which can mean an air leak.
