📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Explorer on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 10-15 minutes if it was recently running.
- 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. The negative cable is the black cable marked with a minus sign.
- 🧠 A MAF sensor is the small electronic sensor in the intake tube that reads incoming air flow.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the MAF Sensor
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift and secure the hood.
- Stand at the front of your Explorer and look for the air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay.
- The MAF sensor is mounted in the air intake tube near the air filter housing and has an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Take a phone photo first.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- If the cable is stuck, use a battery terminal puller (specialty). A battery terminal puller gently lifts the cable end off the battery post without prying.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
Step 3: Unplug the MAF Sensor Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the connector release tab.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift the locking tab while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
- Gentle pressure prevents broken clips.
Step 4: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the two MAF sensor retaining screws.
- Set the screws on a shop towel so they do not fall into the engine bay.
- There is no high torque on these screws; they are small and easy to strip.
Step 5: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Gently pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube by hand.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle it lightly side to side while pulling upward.
- Use a shop towel to cover the opening in the intake tube while the sensor is out.
- Do not allow dust, leaves, or screws to fall into the opening.
Step 6: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Remove the shop towel from the intake opening.
- Make sure the new MAF sensor O-ring seal is seated on the new sensor.
- Slide the new MAF sensor straight into the intake tube by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully seated before tightening the screws.
Step 7: Tighten the MAF Sensor Screws
- Use the Torx T20 screwdriver to install the two retaining screws.
- Tighten them evenly until snug.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten. The sensor body and intake tube are plastic.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the connector onto the MAF sensor by hand until it clicks.
- Use your fingers to lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked in place.
- If the connector has a red or gray lock tab, slide it back into the locked position by hand.
Step 9: Reconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Make sure the cable does not rotate by hand after tightening.
Step 10: Start the Engine
- Start your Explorer and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Use your eyes and ears to check that the intake tube is seated and there are no hissing air leaks.
- The idle may briefly fluctuate while the engine computer relearns air flow readings.

- ✅ Let the engine idle until it feels smooth and stable.
- ✅ Take a short 10-15 minute drive with gentle acceleration.
- ✅ If a check engine light was on before the repair, it may turn off after several drive cycles if the fault is fixed.
