- No infotainment menu, scan-tool service mode, battery disconnect, or programming procedure is required.
- Confirm the replacement sensor’s connector and mounting shape match the original before removing it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Prepare the Work Area
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic’s gloves.
- Use the LED flashlight to check that the area around the air filter housing is free of loose dirt and debris.
- Wait until the ignition has been off for at least one minute before unplugging the sensor.
Step 2: Locate the MAF Sensor
- Use the LED flashlight to find the sensor installed in the plastic air outlet directly downstream from the air filter housing.
- Identify the small electrical connector and two retaining fasteners on the sensor body.
- Photograph the original sensor orientation before removal.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Use a gloved hand to release the connector lock. If equipped with a colored secondary lock, slide that lock outward first.
- Press the main release tab and pull the connector straight away from the sensor.
- Hold the connector body rather than pulling on its wires.
Step 4: Remove the Retaining Fasteners
- Inspect the fasteners with the LED flashlight. Ford production hardware may use either a T20 Torx head or a 7mm hex head.
- A Torx fastener has a six-point, star-shaped recess.
- Use the Torx T20 bit socket or 7mm socket with the 1/4-inch drive ratchet, matching the installed fastener.
- Remove both fasteners and place them somewhere clean and secure.
Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor
- Use a gloved hand to hold the plastic sensor body and pull it straight out of the air duct.
- Do not twist against or touch the exposed sensing elements.
- Use the LED flashlight to inspect the mounting opening for dirt, damage, or pieces of the old seal.
- Remove the old sealing O-ring if it did not come out with the sensor.
Step 6: Install the New Sensor
- Use gloved hands to fit the new sealing O-ring onto the replacement sensor if it is not already installed.
- Hold the replacement sensor only by its plastic body.
- Align the indexing tabs and install it in the same orientation as the original. Any airflow arrow must point toward the engine.
- Start both fasteners by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the correct Torx T20 bit socket or 7mm socket with the inch-pound torque wrench and tighten evenly to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten these small fasteners because the plastic housing can crack.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Use a gloved hand to push the electrical connector straight onto the new sensor until the main tab clicks.
- Engage the colored secondary lock if equipped.
- Gently pull on the connector body to verify it is locked.
Step 8: Clear Codes and Test the Engine
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool and clear the recorded MAF-related trouble codes.
- Remove the scan tool, start the engine, and let it idle for approximately three minutes.
- Use the LED flashlight to verify the sensor remains seated and the connector is secure.
- No MAF programming or Ford-specific relearn procedure is required; the engine computer adapts automatically.

- Confirm the engine idles smoothly and the check-engine light remains off.
- Drive normally for 10-15 minutes while checking for hesitation, stalling, or reduced power.
- Rescan for trouble codes after the test drive.
- If a MAF or lean-mixture code returns, inspect the connector, wiring, air filter housing, and intake duct for leaks or damage.
- Clearing codes resets emissions monitors, so they may need several normal trips to complete again.
