๐Ÿ”ง CX-5 - Fuel Pump Replacement

Replacing the in-tank fuel pump on your CX-5 involves relieving fuel pressure, accessing the pump module under the rear seat area, removing the pump lock ring, and installing a new fuel pump module with a fresh seal. The pump sits inside the fuel tank, so cleanliness and fire safety are very important.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2.5-4 hours

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Gasoline fumes are flammable and harmful to breathe.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Keep sparks, cigarettes, heaters, grinders, and work lights with hot bulbs away from the vehicle.
  • ๐Ÿงฏ Keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby. Class B means it is rated for flammable liquids like gasoline.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel tank access cover.
  • ๐Ÿ‘“ Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves. Gasoline can injure your eyes and irritate skin.
  • โš ๏ธ Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any fuel line.
  • ๐Ÿงผ Clean around the fuel pump cover before opening it. Dirt falling into the tank can damage the new pump.
  • โš ๏ธ The fuel pump lock ring can spark if struck with steel tools. Use a brass drift or non-sparking fuel pump lock ring tool.

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • โ›ฝ Run the fuel level as low as practical before starting. A lighter tank is safer and reduces spill risk.
  • ๐Ÿš— Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ๐ŸงŠ Let the engine cool completely before working near fuel.
  • ๐Ÿงผ Remove loose dirt from the rear seat and floor area before opening the access panel.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is required after fuel pressure is relieved.
  • ๐Ÿ“Œ Assumption: this procedure covers the in-tank fuel pump module accessed from inside the cabin under the rear seat/cargo floor area.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • Use your hand to open the fuel filler door and remove the fuel cap to release tank vapor pressure.
  • Reinstall the fuel cap loosely after pressure is released.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use the interior fuse panel/engine fuse box cover diagram to locate the fuel pump fuse or relay.
  • Use needle-style fuse pullers if equipped, or use a plastic trim removal tool carefully, to remove the fuel pump fuse/relay while the engine is idling.
  • Let the engine stall. Crank the engine for 2-3 seconds once more to remove remaining pressure.
  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Keep your face away from fuel lines.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery cable clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • A negative cable is the black cable marked with a minus symbol.

Step 3: Remove Rear Seat/Cargo Floor Trim

  • Use your hands and a plastic trim removal tool to lift the rear cargo floor panels.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to release any trim clips around the access area.
  • If the rear seat cushion blocks access, use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the seat mounting bolts.
  • Lift the seat cushion carefully and place it aside.
  • During installation, tighten rear seat bolts to Torque to 38-54 Nm (28-40 ft-lbs).
  • Take photos before removing trim.

Step 4: Remove the Fuel Pump Access Cover

  • Use a shop vacuum to clean the area around the access cover before opening it.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket, depending on fastener type, to remove the access cover fasteners.
  • Lift the cover slowly. If it uses sealer, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently loosen the edge.
  • Move the cover aside without damaging the wiring harness.

Step 5: Clean and Mark the Pump Module

  • Use a shop vacuum and clean shop towels to remove all dust from the top of the fuel pump module.
  • Use a fuel-safe marker to mark the pump module position relative to the tank.
  • This mark helps you install the new module in the same direction.
  • Cleanliness protects the new pump.

Step 6: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the release tab on the fuel pump electrical connector.
  • If stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently to help lift the lock tab.
  • Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 7: Disconnect the Fuel Line

  • Place fuel-safe absorbent pads and a drain pan rated for fuel near the line connection.
  • Use fuel line disconnect pliers to release the fuel line retainer.
  • A fuel line retainer is a small plastic clip that locks the fuel line onto the pump outlet.
  • Wrap the connection with a clean shop towel and pull the fuel line straight off.
  • Cap or cover the open line with a clean shop towel to keep dirt out.
  • Replace any damaged fuel line retaining clips.

Step 8: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring tool and 3/8-inch ratchet to rotate the lock ring counterclockwise.
  • If using a punch, use a brass drift punch and dead blow hammer only.
  • A brass drift punch is a soft metal punch that reduces spark risk near gasoline fumes.
  • Tap the lock ring tabs gently until the ring unlocks.
  • Lift the lock ring off and set it aside if replacing it.
  • Do not use a steel chisel or steel punch near the open tank.

Step 9: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

  • Use both hands to lift the fuel pump module straight up slowly.
  • Tilt the module slightly to clear the fuel level float arm without bending it.
  • Let extra fuel drain from the module back into the tank.
  • Place the old module into a drain pan rated for fuel.
  • Remove the old tank seal/O-ring from the tank opening by hand.
  • Use clean shop towels to wipe the sealing surface. Do not let debris fall into the tank.

Step 10: Install the New Seal and Fuel Pump Module

  • Use clean fuel-resistant gloves to place the new fuel pump tank seal/O-ring into the tank groove.
  • Do not reuse the old seal. A reused seal can cause fuel odor or leaks.
  • Lower the new fuel pump module into the tank carefully.
  • Guide the fuel level float arm into the tank without bending it.
  • Align the module with the mark you made earlier using the fuel-safe marker.
  • Make sure the seal stays flat and is not pinched.

Step 11: Install the Lock Ring

  • Install the new fuel pump lock ring by hand first.
  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool and 3/8-inch ratchet to rotate the ring clockwise until fully seated.
  • If using a brass drift punch and dead blow hammer, tap gently and evenly around the ring tabs.
  • The lock ring must sit fully under the tank retaining tabs.
  • Do not overtighten or deform the plastic tank flange.

Step 12: Reconnect Fuel Line and Electrical Connector

  • Push the fuel line straight onto the fuel pump outlet until it clicks.
  • Use your fingers to gently pull back on the fuel line to confirm it is locked.
  • Install a new fuel line retaining clip if the old clip is loose, cracked, or distorted.
  • Push the electrical connector onto the fuel pump until the connector lock clicks.

Step 13: Reconnect Battery and Prime the Fuel System

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the battery terminal clamp to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay if removed.
  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine for 5 seconds, then turn it OFF.
  • Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3-4 times to prime the fuel system.
  • Priming means filling the fuel lines with fuel before starting.

Step 14: Check for Leaks Before Closing the Access Cover

  • Use safety glasses and look closely at the pump outlet, seal area, and fuel line connection.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use a clean shop towel to dab around the connection area. Do not use your bare hand.
  • If fuel appears, turn the engine OFF immediately and fix the connection or seal before continuing.
  • If no leaks are found, turn the engine OFF.

Step 15: Reinstall Access Cover and Interior Trim

  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or 10mm socket to reinstall the fuel pump access cover fasteners.
  • Tighten small access cover screws snugly by hand only, about Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs) if using a torque wrench.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool and your hands to reinstall cargo floor trim and clips.
  • If removed, reinstall the rear seat cushion using a 12mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Tighten rear seat bolts to Torque to 38-54 Nm (28-40 ft-lbs).

โœ… After Repair

  • โœ… Start your CX-5 and let it idle for 2-3 minutes while checking for fuel smell.
  • โœ… Drive gently for 5-10 minutes and confirm there is no hesitation, stalling, or fuel odor.
  • โœ… Recheck under the rear seat/cargo area after the test drive for any smell or dampness.
  • โœ… If the check engine light stays on, scan for codes and clear only after confirming the repair is complete.
  • โœ… Dispose of fuel-soaked towels and the old pump according to local hazardous waste rules.
