  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Keep the fuel tank as low as practical before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Cycle the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Have rags ready to catch small fuel spills.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Use the fuel pump relay or fuel pump fuse to disable the system, then start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  • Crank for a few more seconds to release leftover pressure.
  • Small spills happen even after pressure relief.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • Torque on reassembly: tighten the battery terminal snugly, approximately 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 3: Access the fuel pump module

  • Use a trim panel removal tool to lift the rear seat cushion if equipped with under-seat access.
  • If there is an access cover, remove the cover screws with a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver as equipped.
  • Clean the area around the pump opening before removing anything.

Step 4: Disconnect the electrical and fuel connections

  • Use your fingers and a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to release the connector locks.
  • Use a fuel line disconnect tool (specialty) to remove the fuel supply line from the pump module.
  • Expect a small amount of fuel to drip. Keep rags under the connection.

Step 5: Remove the pump module lock ring

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to loosen the retaining ring.
  • Lift the ring off carefully and keep dirt out of the tank opening.
  • Torque on reassembly: tighten the lock ring to factory specification for the module style installed.

Step 6: Remove the fuel pump module

  • Lift the module straight up and out slowly so the float arm does not bend.
  • Drain fuel from the module into a safe container if needed.
  • Remove the old seal and clean the sealing surface on the tank.

Step 7: Install the new seal and module

  • Install the new fuel pump module seal in the tank opening.
  • Lower the new module into position without pinching the seal.
  • Make sure the module sits fully seated and aligned correctly.

Step 8: Install and torque the lock ring

  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to tighten the ring evenly.
  • Torque to factory specification for the lock ring.
  • Even pressure helps the seal seat correctly.

Step 9: Reconnect lines and wiring

  • Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks fully into place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until the lock engages.
  • Inspect the line for damage before reconnecting.

Step 10: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall the access cover and rear seat parts using the 10mm socket and trim tool.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.
  • Key ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the system.

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check closely for fuel leaks at the pump, line, and access cover.
  • Listen for abnormal pump noise.
  • Take a short road test and recheck for fuel smell or warning lights.
