  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves. Gasoline can injure your eyes and skin.
  • ⚠️ Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any fuel line.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the fuel tank wiring.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle only with jack stands on solid ground. Never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep a class B/C fire extinguisher nearby.
  • ⚠️ Lower the fuel level as much as possible before starting. A full tank is heavy and dangerous to handle.
  • ⚠️ The fuel tank support straps must be tightened securely during reassembly: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Mustang on level ground in a well-ventilated area.

  • ⛽ Drive the fuel level down as close to empty as possible before starting.
  • 🚫 Do not use incandescent work lights near gasoline. Use an LED flashlight only.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is required. You will disconnect the negative battery cable before fuel tank work.

  • ℹ️ A fuel pump lock ring tool turns the large retaining ring that holds the pump module into the tank.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • Open the driver door and make sure the ignition is off.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then move the cable away from the battery post.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before disconnecting fuel lines.
  • Place a fuel-safe drain pan and shop towels under the fuel line area when disconnecting later.
  • Expect a small fuel spill.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks in front of the front tires.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the rear of your Mustang at the proper rear jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the rear support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Remove Underbody Shields or Braces as Needed

  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove any rear underbody shield fasteners blocking tank access.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove any underbody brace or bracket blocking fuel tank lowering.
  • Set all bolts aside in order so they return to the same places.
  • For brace fasteners during reassembly, tighten securely to factory position. If the brace is structural, use service information for the exact torque before driving.

Step 4: Support the Fuel Tank

  • Position a transmission jack or fuel tank support jack under the center of the fuel tank.
  • Use a wide wood block on the jack pad if needed to spread the load evenly.
  • Raise the jack just enough to touch and support the tank. Do not lift the vehicle.

Step 5: Disconnect Filler Neck and Vent Connections

  • Use a 10mm socket or 8mm socket to loosen the fuel filler neck clamp if equipped.
  • Carefully slide the filler hose or neck connection away from the tank fitting.
  • Use your fingers or a small flathead screwdriver to release vapor line retaining tabs if equipped.
  • Mark hose positions with tape before removal if several hoses are close together.
  • Do not pry on plastic nipples.

Step 6: Disconnect Electrical Connectors and Fuel Lines

  • Use a flashlight to locate the fuel pump electrical connector and fuel line quick-connect fittings at the tank.
  • Press the electrical connector lock tab by hand and unplug the connector.
  • Place a fuel-safe drain pan under the fuel line connection.
  • Use the correct size from the fuel line disconnect tool set to release the fuel line connector.
  • Pull the fuel line straight off while holding the connector body, not the hose.
  • Use shop towels to catch any fuel that drips out.

Step 7: Remove Fuel Tank Strap Bolts

  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and extension to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
  • Keep one hand on the strap while removing the last few threads so it does not swing down suddenly.
  • Leave the tank supported by the transmission jack at all times.
  • During reassembly, tighten fuel tank strap bolts to Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Lower the Fuel Tank

  • Use the transmission jack to lower the fuel tank slowly.
  • Stop often and check for any hoses, wires, or lines still attached.
  • If anything is still connected, support the tank and disconnect it before lowering more.
  • Lower the tank enough to access the fuel pump module on top of the tank.

Step 9: Clean Around the Fuel Pump Module

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the top of the tank.
  • Use shop towels and fuel-safe cleaner to clean dirt from around the fuel pump module lock ring.
  • Do not allow dirt to fall into the open fuel tank.
  • Cleanliness prevents future problems.

Step 10: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

  • Install the fuel pump lock ring tool onto the lock ring.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to turn the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
  • If using a brass drift punch and rubber mallet, tap the lock ring tabs counterclockwise gently.
  • Do not use a steel punch near fuel vapors because it can create sparks.

Step 11: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

  • Lift the fuel pump module straight up slowly by hand.
  • Tilt the module carefully to clear the fuel level float arm.
  • Let fuel drain from the module into the tank before fully removing it.
  • Remove the old tank seal by hand and discard it.

Step 12: Install the New Fuel Pump Module

  • Wipe the tank opening with a clean shop towel.
  • Install the new fuel pump module tank seal into the tank groove by hand.
  • Lower the new fuel pump module into the tank carefully without bending the fuel level float arm.
  • Align the module correctly with the locating marks on the tank.
  • Install the new lock ring by hand, then tighten it with the fuel pump lock ring tool until fully seated against the stops.

Step 13: Raise and Reconnect the Fuel Tank

  • Use the transmission jack to raise the fuel tank slowly back into position.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector by hand until the lock clicks.
  • Reconnect the fuel line by pushing it straight onto the fitting until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the fuel line by hand to confirm it is locked.
  • Reconnect the vapor lines and filler neck connections by hand.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to tighten filler neck clamps securely if equipped.

Step 14: Reinstall Fuel Tank Straps

  • Position the fuel tank straps back over the tank.
  • Start all strap bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to snug the strap bolts evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel tank strap bolts to Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Reinstall Shields or Braces

  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to reinstall any underbody shields.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to reinstall any underbody braces or brackets removed earlier.
  • Use a torque wrench where service torque is available; otherwise tighten fasteners securely without overtightening plastic shields.

Step 16: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to raise the rear of your Mustang slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands by hand.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.

Step 17: Reconnect Battery and Prime the Fuel System

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine for 5 seconds, then turn it OFF.
  • Repeat the ON/OFF cycle 3-4 times to prime the fuel system.
  • Check under the vehicle for fuel leaks before starting the engine.

Step 18: Start the Engine and Inspect

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the tank, fuel line, and filler neck areas for leaks.
  • If you smell strong fuel or see a leak, shut the engine off immediately and repair the connection before driving.
