🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

• Open the hood and locate the under-hood fuse/relay box.
• Use the fuse box cover diagram to identify the fuel pump fuse or fuel pump relay.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool or your fingers to remove the fuel pump fuse or relay.
• Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
• Crank the engine for 3-5 more seconds to release remaining pressure.
• Turn the ignition fully OFF.
• Do not crank for too long.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
• Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot touch the post.
• Wait at least 3 minutes before working near fuel system connectors.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Seat Cushion

• Move the front seats forward to create more room.
• Use your hands to pull upward sharply at the front left and front right edges of the rear seat cushion to release the clips.
• If a center retaining bolt is present, use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove it.
• Lift the rear seat cushion upward and out of the vehicle.
• Set the cushion somewhere clean to avoid fuel odor transfer.

Step 4: Remove the Fuel Pump Access Cover

• Locate the round or oval fuel pump service cover under the rear seat area.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently lift the edge of the access cover.
• If screws are fitted, use a 10mm socket or flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip as needed to remove them.
• Lift the cover enough to expose the wiring connector and fuel line.
• Clean loose dirt around the cover with shop towels before opening the tank area.

Step 5: Disconnect the Fuel Pump Electrical Connector

• Press the release tab on the fuel pump electrical connector with your fingers.
• If the tab is stiff, use a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip gently on the connector lock.
• Pull the connector straight off the fuel pump module.
• Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Disconnect the Fuel Line

• Place shop towels around the fuel line connection.
• Position a fuel-safe drain pan nearby for any drips.
• Use fuel line disconnect pliers to release the quick-connect fitting.
• A quick-connect fitting is a plastic fuel line end that locks onto the pump nipple with internal tabs.
• Pull the fuel line straight off the fuel pump module.
• Cap or wrap the fuel line end with a clean shop towel.

Step 7: Mark the Fuel Pump Position

• Use a paint marker to draw an alignment mark from the fuel pump module top to the fuel tank.
• This helps you install the new module in the same direction.
• Do not skip this step because the float arm must face the correct way.

Step 8: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

• Install the fuel pump lock ring tool onto the lock ring tabs.
• Use a 3/8-inch ratchet and extension 6-inch with the lock ring tool to rotate the ring counterclockwise.
• Remove the lock ring and set it aside.
• If replacing the lock ring, compare the new ring to the old one before discarding it.
• Avoid hammering near fuel fumes.

Step 9: Remove the Fuel Pump Module

• Lift the fuel pump module upward slowly by hand.
• Tilt the module carefully to clear the fuel level float arm.
• Let fuel drain from the module into the tank for several seconds.
• Place the old module into a fuel-safe drain pan.
• Remove the old tank seal/O-ring by hand.

Step 10: Install the New Tank Seal

• Use shop towels to wipe the tank sealing surface clean.
• Do not let dirt fall into the fuel tank.
• Install the new fuel pump tank seal/O-ring by hand into the tank opening groove.
• Make sure the seal sits flat and is not twisted.

Step 11: Install the New Fuel Pump Module

• Lower the new fuel pump module into the tank by hand.
• Guide the fuel level float arm in carefully so it does not bend.
• Align the new fuel pump module with the paint mark you made earlier.
• Press the module down evenly so the seal stays seated.

Step 12: Install the Lock Ring

• Place the new fuel pump lock ring over the module.
• Use the fuel pump lock ring tool with a 3/8-inch ratchet and extension 6-inch to rotate the ring clockwise until fully locked against the tank stops.
• If using a service torque-style lock ring tool, Torque to 93 Nm (69 ft-lbs).
• Verify the ring is evenly seated all the way around.

Step 13: Reconnect the Fuel Line and Electrical Connector

• Push the fuel line quick-connect fitting straight onto the fuel pump nipple until it clicks.
• Use your hand to gently tug the fuel line to confirm it is locked.
• Install the new fuel line retaining clip if the old one was removed or damaged.
• Push the electrical connector onto the fuel pump module until it clicks.

Step 14: Reconnect the Battery and Prime the Fuel System

• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reconnect the negative battery terminal.
• Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
• Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay by hand.
• Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine for 2 seconds, then turn it OFF for 10 seconds.
• Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3 times to prime the fuel system.

Step 15: Check for Leaks

• With the access cover still open, inspect the fuel line connection and lock ring area with a flashlight.
• Do not use a lighter or flame to inspect.
• Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
• Look and smell carefully for fuel leaks.
• If any leak appears, turn the engine OFF immediately and fix the connection before continuing.

Step 16: Reinstall the Access Cover and Rear Seat

• Use a plastic trim removal tool to press the fuel pump access cover seal back into place if needed.
• If screws are fitted, use a 10mm socket or flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip to reinstall them snugly.
• Set the rear seat cushion back into position.
• If equipped with a center retaining bolt, use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to install it. Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
• Press firmly down on the front of the rear seat cushion until both front clips snap in.
