🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement
Your Accord’s fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. On this car, the job is usually done from the rear seat access panel, so the tank does not have to come out unless the access path is blocked or damaged.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Fuel vapors are flammable. Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area.
- No smoking, sparks, open flames, or drop lights near the work area.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
- Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines.
- Keep a fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids nearby.
- Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves.
- Do not run the fuel pump dry after installation.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Keep the fuel tank as low as practical. A nearly empty tank makes the job easier.
- Open the fuel door and make sure the cap area is clean.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- Relieve fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump relay or fuse, then crank the engine until it stalls.
- Wait a few minutes after pressure relief before opening any fuel connection.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery and relieve fuel pressure
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the fuel pump relay or fuel pump fuse from the under-hood fuse box.
- Start the engine and let it stall. Crank it for a few more seconds to bleed off pressure.
- Keep rags ready for small fuel spills.
Step 2: Access the fuel pump module
- Use a flat-blade trim tool to lift the rear seat bottom where the access cover is located.
- Remove the access cover fasteners with a 10mm socket if equipped.
- Lift off the access cover and set it aside.
Step 3: Disconnect electrical and fuel connections
- Use needle-nose pliers or your fingers to release any retaining clips.
- Unplug the fuel pump electrical connector.
- Use the fuel line quick-disconnect tool (specialty) to separate the fuel supply line.
- Cover the line ends with shop towels to catch drips.
Step 4: Remove the fuel pump module
- Clean the top of the module with shop towels before opening it.
- Use a fuel pump lock ring tool or brass drift and a light hammer if the lock ring is tight.
- Turn the lock ring counterclockwise and remove it.
- Lift the fuel pump module straight up and out of the tank.
- Angle it slowly to avoid bending the float arm.
Step 5: Install the new fuel pump module
- Compare the new module to the old one before installation.
- Install the new seal in the tank opening.
- Lower the new module into the tank carefully.
- Align the tabs and seats, then install the lock ring.
- Tighten the lock ring fully to seat it. Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs) if using a torque method on the retaining ring style used.
Step 6: Reconnect lines and electrical connectors
- Reconnect the fuel line until it clicks into place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it locks.
- Check that no wires or hoses are pinched.
Step 7: Reassemble the interior
- Reinstall the access cover with the 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the rear seat trim and seat bottom.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 8: Prime and check for leaks
- Turn the ignition to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 3 times to prime the system.
- Inspect the pump area and fuel line for leaks.
- Start the engine and let it idle while checking again for leaks.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the engine starts quickly and idles smoothly.
- Check for fuel odor inside and around the car.
- Test drive gently and confirm normal acceleration.
- If the check engine light is on, scan for fuel pressure or pump circuit codes.
- Recheck for leaks after the first drive.
