🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement
Replacing the fuel pump on your Sierra usually means lowering the fuel tank and removing the fuel pump module from the top of the tank. This is a fuel-system job, so cleanliness and safety matter a lot because gasoline is flammable and the system may stay pressurized.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Keep all flames, sparks, and hot lights away.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- Relieve fuel system pressure before opening any fuel line.
- Support the fuel tank securely before removing straps.
- Use only non-sparking tools if possible, and wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves.
- Have a class B fire extinguisher nearby.
- Do not smoke while doing this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Run the fuel level as low as safely possible before starting. A lighter tank is easier and safer to handle.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve fuel pressure at the service port if equipped, or by following the scan-tool/relay method for this truck.
- If you have access to a scan tool, clear fuel system codes after the repair.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure
- Use the proper fuel system pressure relief method before disconnecting any lines.
- If equipped with a fuel pump relay/fuse service method, remove the fuel pump relay or fuse, start the engine, and let it stall.
- Crank the engine for a few seconds more to reduce remaining pressure.
- Open the fuel cap after pressure is relieved.
Step 2: Disconnect battery and prepare the truck
- Use a wrench or socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise the truck with a floor jack and support it on jack stands if needed for access.
- Make sure the fuel tank is supported before loosening anything.
Step 3: Remove fuel tank skid shield or guards
- Use the correct socket to remove any fuel tank shields or guards.
- Set the hardware aside in order so reassembly is easier.
Step 4: Disconnect filler neck and vent connections
- Use a socket or screwdriver to loosen the filler neck clamp if equipped.
- Disconnect the vent and filler connections carefully so the neck can move with the tank.
Step 5: Disconnect fuel lines and electrical connector
- Use the fuel line disconnect tool set to separate the fuel supply and return lines, if equipped.
- Unplug the electrical connector at the fuel pump module.
- Check for dirt around the connections and clean it off first.
- Keep dirt out of the open fuel lines.
Step 6: Support and lower the fuel tank
- Position a transmission jack or wide support jack under the tank.
- Use a socket and ratchet to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
- Lower the tank slowly and watch for any remaining hoses, wires, or clips.
- Disconnect anything still attached before lowering the tank fully.
- Torque on reassembly: Tighten tank strap bolts to specified factory torque for your truck’s service information.
Step 7: Remove the fuel pump module
- Clean the top of the tank thoroughly before opening it.
- Use a brass punch and hammer to rotate the lock ring counterclockwise if equipped with a retaining ring.
- Lift the fuel pump module straight out of the tank.
- Remove the old seal and discard it.
- Do not bend the fuel level float arm.
Step 8: Install the new fuel pump module
- Install the new seal in the tank opening.
- Lower the new fuel pump module into place carefully.
- Align the tabs correctly before locking it down.
- Use the brass punch and hammer to seat the lock ring fully, if equipped.
- Torque on reassembly: Tighten the lock ring or module retaining hardware to specified factory torque.
Step 9: Reinstall the tank
- Lift the tank back into position with the transmission jack.
- Reconnect fuel lines, vent hoses, and the electrical connector.
- Use the socket and ratchet to reinstall the tank straps.
- Torque on reassembly: Tighten strap bolts to specified factory torque.
- Reinstall any shields or guards removed earlier.
Step 10: Prime and check for leaks
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the system.
- Start the engine and inspect all fuel line connections and the tank area for leaks.
- Use a scan tool to clear any stored codes if needed.
✅ After Repair
- Start the truck and let it idle while you check for fuel leaks.
- Watch the fuel gauge to confirm the level sensor is working normally.
- Take a short road test and verify normal acceleration and no warning lights.
- If the check engine light returns, scan for fuel pressure or pump control codes.
