📋 Before You Begin
- Park your TITAN outside on level ground.
- Run the fuel level as low as safely possible before starting. Less fuel makes the tank much easier to handle.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels.
- Open the fuel door and remove the fuel cap to relieve tank vapor pressure.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- A quick-connect fuel fitting is a plastic locking connector that releases with a special disconnect tool or lock tab. Do not force it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve Fuel System Pressure
- Remove the fuel pump fuse or relay from the under-hood fuse box using the fuse-box diagram on the cover.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
- Crank the engine for 3-5 seconds to remove remaining fuel pressure.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable again using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay after pressure is relieved.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear of the Truck
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the rear axle center section to lift the rear of your TITAN.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Shake the truck lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
- Never work under a jack alone.
Step 3: Remove Obstructions Near the Fuel Tank
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, or trim clip removal tool to remove any fuel tank shields or plastic splash panels blocking access.
- Use a marker pen to mark hose and connector positions before removal.
- Use an LED work light to inspect the fuel tank area.
Step 4: Support the Fuel Tank
- Position a transmission jack (specialty) under the fuel tank.
- Place a wood block 12 in x 12 in between the jack and tank to spread the load.
- Raise the jack until it lightly supports the tank. Do not crush the tank.
Step 5: Disconnect Fuel Filler and Vent Hoses
- At the fuel filler neck area, use a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket if equipped with worm clamps.
- Loosen the filler hose clamp and vent hose clamp.
- Twist the hoses gently by hand to break them free, then pull them off the tank necks.
- If spring clamps are installed, squeeze the clamp ears with needle-nose pliers and slide the clamps back.
- Keep a drain pan 2-gallon minimum nearby for any fuel drips.

- Use a 14mm socket or 17mm socket with a 1/2 in ratchet and 1/2 in extension 6 in to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
- Keep one hand on the tank or jack while removing the final bolt.
- Lower the straps away from the tank.
- If a bolt is badly rusted, work slowly to avoid breaking it.
Step 8: Lower the Fuel Tank
- Slowly lower the transmission jack (specialty) a few inches.
- Check again for any connected hoses, lines, or wiring.
- Disconnect anything still attached using the correct fuel line disconnect tool set (specialty), needle-nose pliers, or by hand.
- Lower the tank fully and slide it out from under your TITAN.
Step 9: Clean Around the Pump Module
- Use shop towels to wipe dirt away from the top of the tank.
- Use only a hand brush or towel near the open fuel system. Do not use compressed air around fuel vapors.
- Use a marker pen to mark the pump module orientation before removal.
- Clean first so dirt stays out.
Step 10: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring
- Install the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) onto the lock ring.
- Turn the lock ring counterclockwise using a 3/8 in ratchet if your lock ring tool accepts a ratchet.
- If needed, use a brass drift punch and rubber mallet to gently tap the lock ring counterclockwise.
- Do not use a steel punch. Steel can spark near fuel vapors.
Step 11: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module
- Lift the old fuel pump module assembly straight up from the tank.
- Tilt it slightly to clear the float arm. The float arm is the small lever that measures fuel level.
- Let fuel drain from the module into the tank before removing it fully.
- Place the old module in a drain pan 2-gallon minimum.
- Remove and discard the old tank seal by hand.
Step 12: Install the New Seal and Pump Module
- Wipe the tank opening with clean shop towels.
- Install the new fuel pump module tank seal into the groove on the tank opening.
- Lower the new fuel pump module assembly into the tank carefully.
- Guide the float arm into the tank without bending it.
- Align the module with the orientation mark made earlier using the marker pen.
Step 13: Install the New Lock Ring
- Set the new fuel pump lock ring onto the module flange.
- Use the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) to turn the ring clockwise until fully seated against the stops.
- If using a brass drift punch and rubber mallet, tap gently and evenly until locked.
- No standard bolt torque applies to the lock ring. It must be fully seated against its locking stops.
Step 14: Raise the Fuel Tank Back Into Position
- Slide the tank under your TITAN on the transmission jack (specialty).
- Raise it slowly with the transmission jack (specialty).
- Pause before the tank reaches the frame to reconnect upper hoses, electrical connectors, and fuel lines.
- Push quick-connect fuel lines on by hand until they click.
- Gently pull each fuel line by hand to confirm it is locked.
Step 15: Reinstall the Tank Straps
- Position the fuel tank straps by hand.
- Start all strap bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the fuel tank strap bolts with a 14mm socket or 17mm socket and torque wrench 10-80 ft-lbs.
- Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs) unless the service information for your exact replacement strap hardware specifies otherwise.
Step 16: Reconnect Filler and Vent Hoses
- Slide the filler hose and vent hose back onto the tank necks by hand.
- Position the clamps in their original locations.
- Tighten worm clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket until snug.
- If spring clamps are used, compress them with needle-nose pliers and release them over the hose bead.
Step 17: Reinstall Shields and Panels
- Reinstall any shields or splash panels removed earlier.
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, or trim clip removal tool as needed.
- Tighten small shield bolts snugly by hand tool only. Do not overtighten plastic retainers.
Step 18: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift your TITAN slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower the truck fully to the ground with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
