🔧 Fuel Pump - Replacement

The fuel pump on your Tacoma is inside the fuel tank. This job involves relieving fuel pressure, lowering the tank, and replacing the pump assembly or module seal as needed. Work slowly and keep all sparks and open flames away from the work area.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before opening the fuel system.
  • Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, cigarettes, heaters, and pilot lights.
  • Keep a drain pan ready; fuel may spill when lines are disconnected.
  • The fuel tank is heavy. Support it fully before removing straps.
  • Use a transmission jack or floor jack with a wide support platform under the tank.

  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel pump assembly - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump module seal - Qty: 1
  • Fuel tank strap bolts or hardware kit - Qty: 1
  • Fuel filter sock - Qty: 1
  • Fuel tank vent hose clamps - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Run the fuel level as low as safely possible before starting. A nearly empty tank is much easier to remove.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Relieve fuel pressure at the fuel system service point before disconnecting lines.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery and relieve fuel pressure

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Relieve fuel pressure at the fuel system service point, then wrap the fitting with a shop towel.
  • Crank only after pressure is relieved.

Step 2: Raise and support the truck

  • Use a floor jack and jack stands to raise and support the Tacoma safely.
  • Keep the rear of the truck stable so the fuel tank can be lowered straight down.

Step 3: Disconnect filler neck and tank connections

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver and pliers to loosen the filler neck clamps and vent hose clamps.
  • Disconnect the evaporative and vent hoses from the tank.
  • Use a fuel line disconnect tool to separate the fuel supply line from the top of the tank assembly.
  • Support the lines so they do not kink.

Step 4: Support the fuel tank

  • Place a transmission jack or wide-support jack under the tank.
  • Position a block or pad so the tank is held flat and secure.

Step 5: Remove fuel tank straps

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
  • Lower the tank slowly while checking for any remaining wiring or hoses.
  • Remove the tank from under the vehicle once all connections are free.

Step 6: Replace the fuel pump assembly

  • Clean the top of the fuel tank with shop towels before opening it.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines from the pump module.
  • Remove the lock ring carefully. Use a flat blade screwdriver if needed, but do not strike it hard.
  • Lift out the old fuel pump assembly.
  • Install the new fuel pump module seal and set the new pump assembly in place.
  • Reinstall the lock ring and make sure it is fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the fuel tank

  • Raise the tank with the transmission jack and reconnect all hoses and electrical connectors.
  • Reinstall the fuel tank straps using a 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs) for the tank strap bolts.
  • Reconnect the fuel line using the fuel line disconnect tool until it clicks in place.

Step 8: Reconnect filler neck and battery

  • Reattach the filler neck and vent hoses using a flat blade screwdriver and pliers.
  • Reinstall any shields or brackets removed earlier with the 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.

Step 9: Prime and check the system

  • Turn the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF. Repeat 2-3 times to prime the system.
  • Start the engine and inspect the tank, lines, and top of the pump for leaks.
  • Listen for the pump before starting.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for fuel leaks with the engine running and again after shutdown.
  • Verify normal idle, throttle response, and starting behavior.
  • If the engine still cranks long, recheck the electrical connector and fuel line connections.
  • Dispose of any spilled fuel and rags safely.
