🔧 Corolla - Fuel Pump Replacement

On your Corolla, the fuel pump sits inside the fuel tank as part of an in-tank pump module. The job is done from inside the car under the rear seat, and the biggest goals are preventing fuel leaks and avoiding sparks.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔥 Work outside or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors ignite easily.
  • 🧯 Keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby; no smoking or open flames.
  • ⚡ Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal to reduce spark risk.
  • 🛑 Relieve fuel pressure before opening any fuel line to prevent spray.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; fuel is hard on skin and eyes.
  • 🧼 Clean around the pump opening first so dirt doesn’t fall into the tank.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Trim removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Brass punch (specialty)
  • Small hammer
  • Fuel line quick-disconnect tool set (specialty)
  • Shop towels
  • Catch pan
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Fire extinguisher (Class B)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel pump module assembly - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump module tank seal (O-ring/gasket) - Qty: 1
  • Fuel pump strainer (sock filter) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the fuel door to help reduce tank vapor pressure.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • Try to work with less than half a tank.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure

  • Remove the fuel pump fuse/relay from the under-hood fuse box using needle-nose pliers.
  • Start the engine and let it run until it stalls; crank for 2–3 seconds once more to release remaining pressure.
  • Turn ignition OFF.

Step 2: Remove the rear seat bottom cushion

  • From the rear footwell area, pull up firmly at the front edge of the rear seat bottom to pop the two retainers loose. Use a trim removal tool if needed.
  • Lift the cushion out of the car and set it aside.

Step 3: Open the fuel pump access cover

  • Locate the metal access cover in the floor under the seat area.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and extension to remove the cover fasteners (if equipped).
  • If the cover is sealed with butyl, gently pry it up using a trim removal tool and small flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 4: Clean the area and disconnect electrical

  • Vacuum/wipe dirt off the top of the pump module using shop towels. Do not blow debris into the opening.
  • Unplug the pump electrical connector by pressing the lock tab (use a small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed).

Step 5: Disconnect fuel line(s)

  • Place shop towels and a catch pan under the connection.
  • Disconnect the fuel line quick-connect fitting. A “quick-connect” is a push-on connector with internal clips that locks onto the line nipple.
  • Use the fuel line quick-disconnect tool set (specialty) if your connector style requires it, then pull the line straight off.
  • Cap/cover the open line ends with a clean towel to keep dirt out.

Step 6: Remove the pump locking ring

  • Mark the lock ring position relative to the tank with a small flat-blade screwdriver (scratch mark) so you can line it up on install.
  • Use a brass punch (specialty) and small hammer to tap the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
  • Use brass to reduce spark risk.

Step 7: Lift out the fuel pump module

  • Carefully lift the module straight up, tilting as needed to clear the float arm (fuel level sender).
  • Let fuel drain from the module into the catch pan.
  • Remove and discard the old tank seal (O-ring/gasket).

Step 8: Install the new seal and pump module

  • Wipe the tank sealing surface clean using shop towels.
  • Install the new fuel pump module tank seal (O-ring/gasket) into the groove in the tank opening (do not reuse the old seal).
  • Lower the new pump module in, making sure the locator marks/arrow on the module aligns the same way as the original.

Step 9: Reinstall and lock the ring

  • Install the lock ring and start it by hand to avoid cross-threading/misalignment.
  • Use the brass punch (specialty) and small hammer to tap the ring clockwise until it fully seats and aligns with your reference marks.
  • Torque: If your lock ring uses fasteners instead of a ring, Torque to Toyota specification for your pump module fasteners using a torque wrench (inch-pound).

Step 10: Reconnect fuel line(s) and electrical

  • Push the fuel line on until it clicks/locks. Tug gently to confirm it’s secure.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 11: Reinstall access cover and rear seat

  • Reinstall the access cover using a 10mm socket.
  • Set the rear seat bottom cushion back in place and press down at the front edge to snap the retainers in.

Step 12: Restore power and prime the system

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay using needle-nose pliers.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON (engine OFF) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds; repeat 3 times to prime the fuel system.
  • Start the engine.

✅ After Repair

  • With the engine running, check for leaks at the pump top and fuel line connection.
  • If you smell strong fuel odor, shut the engine off and re-check the seal and line connection.
  • If the check engine light comes on, scan for codes; a loose connector or line can set EVAP/fuel pressure codes.
