🔧 Fuel Pump Module - Replacement
Your fuel pump on the Equinox is mounted inside the fuel tank, so the repair is done by lowering the tank and swapping the pump module. This is a medium-to-hard job because of fuel handling, tank weight, and limited access.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Fuel vapors are flammable.
- Do not smoke, weld, grind, or use open flames near the vehicle.
- Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines.
- Support the fuel tank before removing straps. A full tank is very heavy.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
- Keep a class B fire extinguisher nearby.
- Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Run the fuel level as low as practical before starting. A nearly empty tank is much easier and safer to remove.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before any fuel line work.
- Relieve fuel pressure at the Schrader valve or by removing the fuel pump fuse/relay and cranking the engine until it stalls.
- Label every connector and hose.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect power
- Use the fuel pump fuse/relay method or the fuel rail service point to relieve pressure.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Wait a few minutes before opening any fuel lines.
Step 2: Raise the vehicle
- Lift the vehicle with a floor jack and support it securely on jack stands.
- Make sure the vehicle is stable before going underneath it.
Step 3: Remove fuel tank shield and access components
- Use an 8mm socket and 10mm socket to remove any shields or covers around the tank.
- Unplug the electrical connector to the fuel pump module and any nearby harness clips.
Step 4: Disconnect fuel and vent lines
- Use the fuel line disconnect tool to separate the fuel line from the pump module.
- Disconnect the vent and EVAP lines by hand or with pliers if retaining clips are present.
- Cap or cover open lines to keep dirt out.
Step 5: Support and lower the fuel tank
- Place a transmission jack or jack pad under the tank.
- Use a 15mm socket to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
- Lower the tank slowly and check for any hoses or wires still attached.
- Go slow. Hidden hoses tear easily.
Step 6: Remove the fuel pump module
- Clean the top of the tank area with shop towels before opening it.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or suitable tool to remove the lock ring if required on your setup.
- Lift the fuel pump module straight out of the tank, taking care not to bend the float arm.
- Remove the old seal and clean the sealing surface.
Step 7: Install the new fuel pump module
- Install the new tank seal in the correct groove.
- Lower the new fuel pump module into the tank in the same orientation as the old one.
- Install the lock ring and tighten it fully by the factory locking method.
- If a torque spec is provided with the replacement ring or service data, follow that exact spec.
Step 8: Reinstall the fuel tank
- Raise the tank back into position with the transmission jack or jack pad.
- Reinstall the straps with a 15mm socket.
- Tighten the tank strap bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect all fuel, vent, and electrical connections.
Step 9: Reassemble and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall any shields or covers with the 8mm socket or 10mm socket.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Cycle the key to ON for 5 seconds, then OFF, 3-4 times to prime the fuel system.
- Check carefully for fuel leaks at the tank, lines, and pump access area.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Verify the fuel gauge reading is normal.
- Road test the vehicle and recheck for leaks afterward.
