🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

• Open the hood and locate the underhood fuse box.
• Use the fuse box cover diagram to identify the fuel pump fuse or relay.
• Use needle-nose pliers to remove the fuel pump fuse or relay.
• Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
• Crank the engine for 3-5 seconds with the key or start button to remove leftover pressure.
• Turn the ignition off.
• Less pressure means less fuel spray.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

• Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
• Remove the negative cable from the battery and move it aside so it cannot touch the post.
• This prevents sparks while the fuel system is open.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Truck

• Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the rear of your Canyon at the approved rear lift point.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
• Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
• Shake the truck lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 4: Support the Fuel Tank

• Position a transmission jack or fuel tank support adapter under the fuel tank.
• If using a floor jack, place a wide wood block between the jack and tank to spread the load.
• Raise the jack until it lightly supports the tank. Do not crush the tank.

Step 5: Remove Nearby Shields or Brackets

• Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove any fuel tank shield or bracket fasteners blocking access.
• Use a trim clip removal tool if plastic retainers are installed.
• Set the hardware aside in order so it goes back in the same location.

Step 6: Disconnect Fuel Filler and Vent Hoses

• At the fuel tank neck area, loosen the hose clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver if clamp screws are used.
• If spring clamps are used, squeeze them with needle-nose pliers and slide them back.
• Twist the filler hose gently by hand and pull it off the tank neck.
• Remove the smaller vent hose the same way.
• Twist first, then pull gently.

Step 7: Disconnect Electrical Connectors and Fuel Lines

• Lower the tank a few inches with the transmission jack or floor jack only enough to reach the top connections.
• Press the locking tab on the fuel pump electrical connector and unplug it by hand.
• Use a fuel line disconnect tool set to release the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting.
• Wrap the fitting with shop towels while disconnecting to catch fuel drips.
• Use a drain pan under the connection area.
• Disconnect the EVAP vapor line quick-connect by pressing its tabs or using the correct size from the fuel line disconnect tool set.

Step 8: Remove the Fuel Tank Straps

• Confirm the tank is fully supported by the jack.
• Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
• Lower the straps away from the tank.
• Carefully lower the tank with the jack.
• Watch for any hose or wire still attached. Stop immediately if anything catches.

Step 9: Clean the Top of the Fuel Tank

• Use shop towels to wipe dirt from the top of the tank around the fuel pump module.
• Do not let dirt fall into the tank opening.
• Cleanliness protects the new pump.

Step 10: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

• Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to rotate the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
• If needed, use a brass punch and rubber mallet to tap the lock ring loose.
• Do not use a steel punch because it can create sparks.
• Lift the lock ring off the pump module.

Step 11: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

• Lift the fuel pump module straight up by hand.
• Tilt it slowly to clear the fuel level float arm. The float arm is the small lever that measures fuel level.
• Let fuel drain from the module into the tank before removing it completely.
• Place the old module in a drain pan.
• Remove and discard the old tank seal/O-ring by hand.

Step 12: Install the New Seal and Pump Module

• Wipe the tank sealing surface with shop towels.
• Install the new fuel pump tank seal/O-ring into the tank groove.
• Lower the new fuel pump module into the tank by hand.
• Guide the fuel level float arm carefully so it does not bend.
• Align the module marks with the tank marks.

Step 13: Install the Lock Ring

• Install the new fuel pump lock ring over the module.
• Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to rotate the ring clockwise until fully seated against the stops.
• If using a brass punch and rubber mallet, tap gently and evenly.
• The ring must be fully locked or fuel vapors and leaks can occur.

Step 14: Raise the Tank and Reconnect Lines

• Use the transmission jack or floor jack to raise the tank partway into position.
• Reconnect the fuel pump electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
• Push the fuel supply line onto the pump fitting until it clicks.
• Reconnect the EVAP vapor line by hand until it clicks.
• Gently pull each line by hand to confirm it is locked.

Step 15: Reinstall the Tank Straps

• Raise the tank fully into position with the transmission jack or floor jack.
• Install the fuel tank straps by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lbs to tighten the strap bolts.
• Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs) unless the service label or replacement hardware specifies otherwise.

Step 16: Reconnect Filler and Vent Hoses

• Slide the fuel filler hose fully onto the tank neck by hand.
• Slide the vent hose fully onto its fitting by hand.
• Use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten screw clamps securely.
• If spring clamps are used, position them with needle-nose pliers in their original locations.

Step 17: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Truck

• Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to reinstall any removed shields or brackets.
• Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall plastic retainers if removed.
• Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower the truck fully to the ground.

Step 18: Reconnect Battery and Prime the Fuel System

• Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay by hand.
• Reconnect the negative battery cable.
• Use a 10mm socket to snug the negative terminal clamp.
• Turn the ignition to ON for 5 seconds without starting.
• Turn it OFF for 10 seconds.
• Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3 times to prime the fuel system.
• Start the engine and let it idle.
