🔧 Focus - Fuel Pump Replacement

On your Focus, the electric fuel pump is built into the fuel pump module inside the fuel tank. The tank must be lowered to access and replace the module because there is no normal service access panel under the rear seat.

This repair involves fuel vapors, electrical connectors, and supporting the fuel tank safely. Work slowly, keep sparks/flames far away, and do not rush the fuel line release clips.

  • ⚠️ Work outside or in a very well-ventilated area. Gasoline vapors can ignite easily.
  • ⚠️ Keep all flames, cigarettes, heaters, and spark-producing tools away from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before working near the fuel tank.
  • ⚠️ Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel lines.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and fuel-resistant gloves. Fuel can irritate skin and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack or floor jack and wide wood block before removing tank straps.
  • ⚠️ Do not use an incandescent work light near fuel. Use an LED work light only.
  • ⚠️ Avoid static electricity. Touch bare metal on the body before opening fuel connections.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Focus on level ground, shift to Park or Neutral, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks at the front wheels before lifting the rear of the vehicle.
  • ⛽ Run the fuel level as low as safely possible before this job. A lighter tank is much safer to lower.
  • 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • 🧰 A fuel line disconnect tool releases spring-lock fuel fittings. It slides into the fitting to unlock the internal retainer.
  • 🧰 A fuel pump lock ring tool turns the large ring that holds the pump module in the tank.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • Open the hood and locate the battery.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the negative battery cable from the battery post.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes so residual pressure can bleed down.
  • Place shop towels around fuel line areas later in the job to catch small fuel drips.
  • Less fuel means easier lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the rear of your Focus at the rear jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper rear support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Support the Fuel Tank

  • Place a wood block 12-inch minimum on the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Position the jack and wood block under the fuel tank.
  • Raise the jack until the wood block just touches the tank. Do not crush the tank.
  • The wood block spreads the load so the jack does not damage the tank.

Step 4: Disconnect Filler Neck and Vent Connections

  • Use a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip or needle-nose pliers to release the hose clamp at the fuel filler neck if equipped with a clamp-style connection.
  • Carefully twist the filler hose by hand to break it loose, then slide it off the tank neck.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release small vent hose clips.
  • Label or position hoses so they go back to the same places during installation.
  • Take a phone photo first.

Step 5: Disconnect Fuel and Electrical Lines

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the fuel line area.
  • Use shop towels around the fuel quick-connect fittings.
  • Use the correct fuel line disconnect tool set 3/8-inch and 5/16-inch to release the fuel line fitting.
  • Press the tool into the fitting, then pull the line straight off. Do not pry the plastic fitting sideways.
  • Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector by pressing the locking tab with your fingers or a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip.
  • Inspect the connector for melted plastic or corrosion before reinstalling later.

Step 6: Remove Fuel Tank Straps

  • Confirm the tank is still supported by the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and wood block 12-inch minimum.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a ratchet 3/8-inch drive and socket extension 6-inch to remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
  • Keep one hand near the strap as the last bolt comes loose so it does not swing down unexpectedly.
  • Set the tank straps and bolts aside in order.

Step 7: Lower the Fuel Tank

  • Slowly lower the tank a few inches using the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Stop often and look for any hose, wire, or line still attached.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip only to gently help release plastic clips if needed.
  • Lower the tank enough to access the top fuel pump module.

Step 8: Clean Around the Fuel Pump Module

  • Use shop towels to wipe dirt from the top of the tank around the pump module.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the tank opening.
  • If heavy dirt is present, wipe outward away from the module opening.
  • Clean now prevents future problems.

Step 9: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring tool to turn the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
  • If a lock ring tool will not fit, use a brass punch 3/8-inch and rubber mallet to tap the lock ring tabs counterclockwise.
  • Use brass only because it is less likely to create sparks than steel.
  • Lift off the lock ring and set it aside if replacing it.

Step 10: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

  • Lift the old fuel pump module straight up by hand.
  • Tilt it slightly to clear the fuel level float arm without bending it.
  • Let excess fuel drain from the module into the tank opening for a few seconds.
  • Place the old module into the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.
  • Remove the old tank seal/O-ring by hand and discard it.

Step 11: Install the New Fuel Pump Module

  • Install the new fuel pump tank seal/O-ring into the tank groove by hand.
  • Lightly wet the seal with clean gasoline using a shop towel so it seats smoothly.
  • Lower the new fuel pump module assembly into the tank by hand.
  • Make sure the alignment marks on the module and tank line up.
  • Do not force the float arm. It must move freely inside the tank.

Step 12: Install the Lock Ring

  • Install the new fuel pump lock ring over the module.
  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to turn the ring clockwise until fully seated against the stops.
  • If using the backup method, use a brass punch 3/8-inch and rubber mallet to tap the ring clockwise until locked.
  • Confirm the module sits flat and the seal is not pinched.

Step 13: Raise the Fuel Tank Into Position

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum and wood block 12-inch minimum to slowly raise the fuel tank.
  • Stop when the top of the tank is close enough to reconnect the lines and electrical connector.
  • Route hoses and wiring exactly as they were before removal.

Step 14: Reconnect Fuel Lines and Electrical Connector

  • Push each fuel line straight onto the pump fitting by hand until it clicks.
  • Gently tug each line by hand to confirm it is locked.
  • Install any new fuel line retaining clips if the old clips are damaged or loose.
  • Reconnect the fuel pump electrical connector until the lock tab clicks.
  • Reconnect vent hoses by hand and secure clips using needle-nose pliers.

Step 15: Reinstall Fuel Tank Straps

  • Raise the tank fully into position with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Install the tank straps by hand first so the bolts do not cross-thread.
  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket with a ratchet 3/8-inch drive to snug the strap bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the tank strap bolts to Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • If your strap bolt size differs, use the socket that fits tightly and do not round the bolt head.

Step 16: Reconnect Filler Neck and Final Hoses

  • Slide the filler hose back onto the tank neck by hand.
  • Use needle-nose pliers or a flathead screwdriver 1/4-inch tip to secure the hose clamp.
  • Reconnect all vent hoses and clips.
  • Check that no hose is kinked, stretched, or pinched above the tank.

Step 17: Lower the Vehicle

  • Remove all tools from under the vehicle.
  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the rear slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum.

Step 18: Reconnect Battery and Prime the Fuel System

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the key to ON without starting the engine for 5 seconds, then turn it OFF.
  • Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3-4 times to prime the fuel system.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ With the engine idling, look under your Focus for fuel leaks near the tank and fuel line connections.
  • ✅ Shut the engine off immediately if you smell strong fuel or see any dripping.
  • ✅ Confirm the fuel gauge reads normally after adding fuel.
  • ✅ Take a short test drive, then recheck for leaks.
  • ✅ Dispose of fuel-soaked towels and absorbent pads safely according to local rules.
  • ✅ If the engine cranks but does not start, recheck the fuel pump electrical connector and fuel line connections.
