Replacing the fuel pump module on your Odyssey means removing the fuel tank access cover inside the cabin, disconnecting the fuel lines and wiring, then replacing the in-tank pump module. The fuel pump module is the complete assembly inside the fuel tank that sends fuel to the engine and includes the pump, strainer, and fuel level sender.

  • Park your Odyssey on level ground in a well-ventilated area.
  • Run the fuel level as low as practical before starting. A nearly empty tank is safer and easier to work around.
  • Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • Open all doors for ventilation before opening the fuel tank access area.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • A quick-connect fuel fitting is a plastic fuel line connector that locks onto the pump with tabs or a retainer clip.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Relieve Fuel Pressure

  • Use your hand to open the fuel filler door.
  • Use your hand to slowly loosen the fuel cap to release tank vapor pressure, then reinstall it loosely.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use the under-dash fuse box cover diagram to locate the fuel pump fuse or relay.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the fuel pump fuse or relay while the engine is idling.
  • Let the engine stall, then crank it for 2-3 seconds to remove leftover pressure.
  • Turn the ignition OFF.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it away from the terminal.
  • Wrap the cable end with a shop towel so it cannot spring back onto the battery.
  • Torque on reassembly: 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 3: Access the Fuel Pump Cover

  • Use a trim removal tool set to lift the rear cargo floor trim panel.
  • Use a trim removal tool set to move the carpet or floor covering away from the fuel pump access cover area.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the round or oval metal fuel pump access cover in the floor.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extension to remove the access cover bolts.
  • Lift the cover carefully and set it aside.
  • Keep screws in a cup.

Step 4: Clean Around the Pump Top

  • Use shop towels to wipe loose dirt from the top of the fuel pump module.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the fuel line fittings and electrical connector.
  • Do not allow dirt to fall into the fuel tank when the pump is removed.

Step 5: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Use your hand to press the locking tab on the fuel pump electrical connector.
  • Pull the connector straight off the fuel pump module.
  • If the connector is tight, use a flat blade screwdriver gently to help release the tab.
  • Do not pry hard on the connector body because it can crack.

Step 6: Disconnect the Fuel Line

  • Place shop towels around the fuel line fitting to catch any fuel drips.
  • Place a drain pan nearby for fuel-soaked towels.
  • Use fuel line disconnect pliers to release the quick-connect fitting tabs.
  • Pull the fuel line straight off the pump outlet.
  • Use shop towels to plug and wrap the line end loosely.
  • If a plastic retainer clip comes off damaged, replace it with a new fuel line retainer clip.

Step 7: Remove the Fuel Pump Lock Ring

  • Use a fuel pump lock ring tool to engage the tabs on the lock ring.
  • Turn the lock ring counterclockwise until it unlocks from the tank.
  • Lift the lock ring off the pump module.
  • Do not use a steel punch and hammer. Sparks near fuel vapor are dangerous.
  • No torque spec applies during removal because the lock ring is a twist-lock retaining ring.

Step 8: Remove the Old Fuel Pump Module

  • Use your hands to lift the fuel pump module straight up a few inches.
  • Tilt the module slightly as needed to clear the fuel level float arm.
  • Let fuel drain from the module back into the tank before removing it fully.
  • Place the old module into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old fuel pump tank seal from the tank opening by hand.

Step 9: Install the New Tank Seal

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the tank sealing surface.
  • Use your hands to place the new fuel pump tank seal evenly into the tank groove.
  • Make sure the seal is not twisted, pinched, or stretched.
  • A pinched seal causes vapor leaks.

Step 10: Install the New Fuel Pump Module

  • Use your hands to lower the new fuel pump module into the tank.
  • Guide the fuel level float arm carefully through the tank opening.
  • Align the module marks with the marks on the tank.
  • Hold the module down evenly against the new seal.

Step 11: Reinstall the Lock Ring

  • Use your hands to place the lock ring over the fuel pump module.
  • Use the fuel pump lock ring tool to turn the lock ring clockwise until fully seated and locked.
  • Make sure all lock tabs are engaged evenly.
  • No standard bolt torque is used because the fuel pump module is retained by a lock ring.

Step 12: Reconnect the Fuel Line and Electrical Connector

  • Use your hand to push the fuel line quick-connect fitting onto the pump outlet until it clicks.
  • Gently pull back by hand to confirm the fitting is locked.
  • Use your hand to plug in the fuel pump electrical connector until the lock clicks.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the wiring is not pinched or stretched.

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use your hand to place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket, torque wrench, and extension to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 14: Prime the Fuel System

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or relay using needle-nose pliers if it was removed.
  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine for 2 seconds.
  • Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat this ON/OFF cycle 3 times to fill the new pump module and fuel line.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the fuel pump top for leaks.

Step 15: Start and Leak Check

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the pump seal area and fuel line connector for wetness or fuel smell.
  • If any leak appears, turn the engine OFF immediately and fix the connection or seal before continuing.
  • Do not reinstall the access cover until the leak check is complete.

Step 16: Reinstall the Access Cover and Trim

  • Use a 10mm socket, torque wrench, and extension to reinstall the fuel pump access cover bolts.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
  • Use your hands and a trim removal tool set to reposition the carpet and cargo floor trim.
  • Make sure the trim sits flat and does not pinch wiring.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Odyssey and let it idle for several minutes.
  • ✅ Check for fuel smell inside and outside the vehicle.
  • ✅ Confirm the fuel gauge reads normally after several minutes.
  • ✅ Road test gently for 5-10 minutes, then recheck for fuel smell or leaks.
  • ✅ No battery registration, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
