- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open a window or leave a door open so you don’t lock keys inside.
- Relieve fuel pressure: remove the fuel pump fuse/relay, then start the car and let it stall; repeat once. Use needle-nose pliers if needed for the fuse/relay.
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket, then wait 2 minutes.
- Have shop rags and a catch pan ready—some fuel will drip.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the fuel pump service cover
- Fold the rear seat backs down if needed for room.
- Remove the rear seat bottom cushion (release the front latches). Use a trim clip removal tool to help lift without tearing upholstery.
- Locate the round/oval service cover in the floor above the fuel tank.
- Remove service cover fasteners using an 8mm socket (some covers use clips—use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully).
Step 2: Clean the area and mark orientation
- Wipe/vacuum all loose dirt around the pump opening using shop rags.
- Use a marker or paint pen to mark the pump module position relative to the tank. This helps the new module sit the same way.
Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and unplug the pump wiring connector by hand.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle—don’t yank wires.
Step 4: Disconnect the fuel lines
- Place a catch pan and shop rags under the line connections.
- Use a fuel line disconnect tool set to release the quick-connect fittings.
- Quick-connect = push-on fitting with internal clip.
- Cap/cover the lines with shop rags to keep dirt out.
Step 5: Remove the fuel pump lock ring
- Install the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) onto the lock ring.
- Use a 3/8" drive ratchet (and 3" extension if needed) to turn the lock ring counterclockwise until it releases.
- Do not use a hammer and punch—sparks risk.
Step 6: Remove the old fuel pump module
- Lift the module straight up slowly. Tilt as needed to clear the float arm (fuel level sensor arm).
- Float arm = the thin arm with a small “bobber”.
- Drain fuel from the module into the catch pan.
- Remove the old tank seal/O-ring from the tank opening by hand; use a flat-blade screwdriver only if necessary.
Step 7: Install the new seal and new fuel pump module
- Install the new fuel pump module seal / O-ring into the tank groove. Make sure it sits flat and isn’t twisted.
- Lower the new pump module into the tank, guiding the float arm carefully.
- Align the module to your marker or paint pen marks.
Step 8: Reinstall and tighten the lock ring
- Thread the lock ring on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the lock ring with the fuel pump lock ring tool (specialty) and 3/8" drive ratchet until fully seated/locked at the stops.
- If your replacement lock ring includes a torque spec, use a torque wrench (ft-lb) and follow that spec.
Step 9: Reconnect fuel lines and electrical
- Push fuel lines on until they click/lock. Use your hands only.
- Install any new fuel line retaining clips as required.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 10: Reinstall the service cover and rear seat
- Reinstall the service cover and tighten fasteners using an 8mm socket.
- Reinstall the rear seat bottom cushion; press down firmly to latch it in.
Step 11: Restore power and prime the fuel system
- Reconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the fuel pump fuse/relay (if removed).
- Key ON (engine OFF) for 5 seconds, then OFF for 10 seconds; repeat 3 times to prime the system.
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and let it idle while you check for fuel smell and leaks at the pump and line connections.
- Turn the car off and re-check for dampness around the lock ring and lines using a dry shop rag.
- If a check engine light appears, use a scan tool to check fuel pressure-related codes (often set if the system wasn’t fully primed).
