📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your F-150 on firm, level ground. Shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and place wheel chocks at the front wheels.
  • ⛽ Reduce the tank below one-quarter full. Do not siphon fuel by mouth or drain it onto the ground.
  • 🔍 Confirm the replacement module matches the tank capacity and electrical connector before opening the fuel system.
  • 💻 Connect the bidirectional scan tool to the OBD-II port beneath the steering column. Follow Powertrain Control Module > Fuel System > Fuel Pressure Release when that function is supported.
  • ⚙️ If the scan tool lacks that command, disconnect the fuel-pump control module connector above the spare-tire area, start the engine, allow it to stall, and crank for approximately five seconds. Turn the ignition off afterward.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and use a 10mm socket with the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the truck

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at an approved rear lifting point and raise your F-150.
  • Position the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum beneath both rear frame rails, then lower the frame onto them.
  • Leave enough room beneath the tank for the tank and jack to roll out.
  • Push gently on the truck to verify stability.

Step 2: Remove the tank shield if equipped

  • Use the matching 13mm socket or 15mm socket, the 6-inch socket extension, and the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the shield fasteners.
  • Support the shield while removing its final fastener, then lower it carefully.
  • Keep each fastener with the shield because shield equipment varies with drivetrain and tank configuration.

Step 3: Disconnect the filler and vent connections

  • Use the 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to loosen a screw-type filler-hose clamp. Use the hose-clamp pliers if spring clamps are installed.
  • Twist the filler hose gently and pull it from the tank neck. Use the plastic trim-removal tool only to break the hose seal.
  • Release the smaller vapor-line locking tab by hand or with the plastic trim-removal tool, then pull the connector straight off.
  • Do not pry against or crack the plastic tank fittings.

Step 4: Support the fuel tank

  • Center the fuel-tank support adapter or 24-by-24-inch plywood board on the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Raise the jack until the board contacts the broad center of the tank without lifting the truck.
  • Confirm the tank cannot roll or slide from the support.

Step 5: Remove the tank straps

  • Use the correctly fitting 13mm socket or 15mm socket, the 6-inch socket extension, and the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the tank-strap bolts.
  • Swing the straps away while keeping the tank supported by the jack.
  • Do not use an impact wrench near an open or leaking fuel system.

Step 6: Lower the tank enough to reach its connections

  • Lower the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum only a few inches.
  • Use the LED work light to inspect above the tank. Stop immediately if any hose or harness becomes tight.
  • Press the pump-module electrical connector lock by hand, then disconnect it. Use the plastic trim-removal tool only if the lock is difficult to release.
  • Disconnect any remaining evaporative-emission connectors by pressing their locking tabs by hand.

Step 7: Disconnect the fuel feed line

  • Place the fuel-safe drain pan, 5-gallon minimum beneath the connection and cover the fitting with a fuel-resistant shop towel.
  • Remove the safety clip by hand. Insert the correctly sized 5/16-inch or 3/8-inch fuel-line disconnect tool into the coupling, push the line inward, then pull it straight off.
  • Cap or cover the open line to keep dirt out. Replace a damaged safety clip rather than reusing it.

Step 8: Remove the fuel tank

  • Check once more with the LED work light that every line, hose, and connector is free.
  • Lower the tank slowly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Roll the supported tank out from beneath your F-150. Get a helper if the remaining fuel makes it difficult to control.

Step 9: Clean around the module

  • Use the compressed-air blow gun with regulated air supply to remove loose dirt while the tank remains closed.
  • Use the brass-bristle cleaning brush to loosen packed debris around the module and lock ring.
  • Remove every loose particle before opening the tank; contamination can damage the new pump and fuel injectors.

Step 10: Remove the lock ring and old module

  • Fit the fuel pump module lock-ring tool 310-123 or equivalent over the lock ring.
  • Use the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to rotate the ring counterclockwise until released.
  • Lift the old module slowly. Tilt it only enough to guide the fuel-level float through the opening without bending its arm.
  • Drain the module into the fuel-safe drain pan, 5-gallon minimum.
  • Remove and discard the old sealing O-ring by hand.

Step 11: Install the new pump module

  • Clean the tank’s sealing groove with a fuel-resistant shop towel. Do not push dirt into the tank.
  • Install the new O-ring dry in the tank groove unless the replacement-module instructions specifically supply an approved lubricant.
  • Guide the new module and float into the tank. Align its locating tab with the molded alignment feature on the tank.
  • Verify the O-ring remains flat and is not pinched beneath the module flange.

Step 12: Secure the module

  • Install the lock ring and rotate it clockwise using the fuel pump module lock-ring tool 310-123 or equivalent and the 3/8-inch-drive ratchet.
  • Seat the ring fully against its locking stops. If the service lock-ring tool supports torque measurement, use the 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench and torque to 89 Nm (66 ft-lbs).
  • Replace the ring if it is bent, heavily corroded, or will not engage every locking tab.
  • A pinched seal will leak when the tank is full.

Step 13: Raise and reconnect the tank

  • Position the tank on the fuel-tank support adapter or 24-by-24-inch plywood board and raise it slowly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Push the fuel feed connector onto the module by hand until it clicks. Install its safety clip, then pull back firmly to verify it is locked.
  • Reconnect the electrical and evaporative-emission connectors by hand until each lock clicks.
  • Route every line in its original clip so nothing is pinched between the tank and frame.

Step 14: Install the tank straps

  • Raise the tank fully, position both straps, and start the strap bolts by hand.
  • Use the appropriate 13mm socket or 15mm socket with the 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench and torque the fuel-tank strap bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Lower and remove the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.

Step 15: Reconnect the filler system

  • Push the filler hose completely onto its tank neck without twisting it.
  • Reposition a spring clamp using the hose-clamp pliers, 9-inch. If equipped with a screw clamp, tighten it securely using the 8mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet.
  • Reconnect the vapor fitting by hand until its lock clicks, then tug gently to confirm engagement.

Step 16: Reinstall the shield and lower the truck

  • Support the shield and start every fastener by hand.
  • Use the original fastener’s matching 13mm socket or 15mm socket and the 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten it to the specification appropriate to the installed shield hardware. Do not use the tank-strap torque for shield bolts.
  • Raise your F-150 with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck to the ground.

Step 17: Reconnect the battery and prime the system

  • If disconnected for pressure relief, reconnect the fuel-pump control module connector by hand until its lock clicks.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Without pressing the brake pedal, switch the ignition on for five seconds and then off for ten seconds. Repeat this cycle three times.
  • Start the engine. Extended cranking on the first start can indicate that the system needs one additional priming cycle.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Let the engine idle and inspect beneath the tank with the LED work light. Shut the engine off immediately if you smell or see leaking fuel.
  • 💻 Use the bidirectional scan tool to check for diagnostic trouble codes. Clear only codes caused by the disconnected pump circuit, then confirm they do not return.
  • ⛽ Add fuel gradually and recheck the lock-ring area, filler hose, and line connections for leakage before filling the tank completely.
  • 📊 Confirm the fuel gauge changes normally. An incorrect reading can indicate a bent or obstructed float arm.
  • 🚗 Take a short road test, park on a clean surface, and perform one final leak and odor inspection.
