📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your RAV4 on level ground and shift to Park.
• 🔌 Turn the vehicle fully OFF. Make sure the READY light is off.
• 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• ⛽ Open the fuel door using the fuel door release inside the vehicle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to pull the fuel door release lever inside your RAV4.
• The fuel door is on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
• Work slowly around fuel vapors.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
• Let the cap hang by its tether if the tether is still attached.
• A tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap from falling or getting lost.

Step 3: Remove the Cap Tether

• Use your hand to slide the old cap tether off the fuel door holder or retaining point.
• If the tether is stiff, use a clean microfiber towel for better grip.
• Do not pry hard with metal tools because the fuel door area can scratch easily.

Step 4: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck

• Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface where the cap gasket touches.
• The gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the underside of the fuel cap.
• Check for dirt, rust, dents, or fuel residue on the filler neck.
• If the sealing surface is damaged, the new cap may not seal correctly.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

• Use your hand to attach the new fuel cap tether to the same retaining point used by the old cap.
• Make sure the tether is not twisted.
• The cap should be able to reach the filler neck easily.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
• Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
• Continue turning until you hear at least one firm click.
• No torque wrench is used for this part; the cap’s internal ratchet controls tightness.
• One solid click is enough.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
• Make sure the tether is tucked inside and not pinched by the fuel door.

• ✅ Start your RAV4 and check that there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
• 🔍 If the check engine light was caused by a loose or bad fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off on its own.
• 🧰 A basic OBD-II scan tool can clear fuel cap-related evaporative emissions codes after confirming the cap is installed correctly.
• ⚠️ If the check engine light returns, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system, not the cap.
