🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to press the rear edge of the fuel door inward, then release it so it pops open.
• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the fuel cap area.
• Work slowly near fuel vapors.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to turn the old fuel filler cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
• Let the cap hang by its tether if it is still attached.
• The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap connected to the fuel door area.

Step 3: Detach the Cap Tether

• Use your hand to unclip the old cap tether from the fuel door or filler area.
• Do not pull hard on the fuel door. The fuel door hinge can bend if forced.
• If the tether clip feels stuck, wiggle it gently by hand until it releases.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

• Use your hand to attach the new fuel cap tether to the same mounting point where the old one was attached.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to place the new fuel filler cap onto the fuel filler neck.
• Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
• Subaru-style fuel caps should be tightened until you hear at least one clear click.
• No torque spec is used for this cap; tighten by hand only.

Step 6: Close the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
• Check that the cap tether is fully inside and not caught in the fuel door.
