🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Press the fuel-fill-door release button inside the Insight.
• Wait for the instrument display to change from Please Wait to Ready.
• Allow the fuel door to open before touching the cap. This waiting period lets the sealed tank vent normally. techinfo.honda.com

Step 2: Remove the Old Cap

• Put on the nitrile fuel-resistant gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
• Turn the old cap counterclockwise slowly by hand.
• If you hear pressure escaping, stop and wait until it becomes quiet before continuing.
• Place the cap in the holder inside the fuel door.

Step 3: Release the Tether

• Inspect where the plastic tether attaches to the fuel-door area.
• If it uses a push-in retainer, carefully lift the retainer with the plastic trim-removal tool.
• Do not pry against the painted outer body panel.
• If the tether is permanently attached to the old cap, remove the cap and tether together.

Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck

• Use the clean lint-free shop towel to wipe dust from the sealing surface.
• Do not push the towel into the filler neck.
• Check that no piece of the old rubber seal remains stuck to the neck.
• Dust under the seal can cause leaks.

Step 5: Install the New Cap

• Compare the old and new caps before installation. The sealing gasket, thread shape, diameter, and tether arrangement must match.
• Press the new tether retainer into its mounting hole by hand. Use the plastic trim-removal tool only if gentle seating pressure is needed.
• Place the new cap squarely onto the filler neck.
• Turn it clockwise by hand until it clicks at least once. No torque wrench is used. techinfo.honda.com
• Do not continue forcing the cap after it clicks. More muscle doesn’t make gasoline behave better.

Step 6: Close the Fuel Door

• Make sure the tether is not trapped between the door and body.
• Close the fuel door gently by hand until it sits flush.

• ✅ Tug lightly on the cap to verify it is fully seated.
• ✅ Confirm the fuel door closes without pinching the tether.
• ✅ Check for a gasoline smell or visible wetness before driving.
• ✅ If a warning light was caused by a loose cap, drive normally for several trips. The vehicle may need time to repeat its fuel-vapor self-test.
• ⚠️ If the warning remains, the cap may not be the cause. The filler neck, purge system, vent system, or vapor lines may require diagnosis.
