๐Ÿ”ง Accord - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Accord is a very simple repair. A loose, worn, or leaking fuel cap can cause a fuel smell, poor evaporative emissions sealing, or a check engine light for an EVAP leak.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • โ›ฝ Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames, cigarettes, heaters, or sparks.
  • ๐Ÿงค Avoid touching fuel residue with bare hands; gasoline can irritate skin.
  • ๐Ÿš— Turn the engine off before opening the fuel door.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Park your Accord on level ground and shift to Park.
  • ๐Ÿ”ด Set the parking brake.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Turn the engine off.
  • โ›ฝ Do not replace the cap while actively refueling.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก The fuel cap seals the fuel tank vapor system. That vapor system is called EVAP, short for evaporative emissions system.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to press the rear edge of the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
  • The fuel door should pop open.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Press gently; do not pry.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes free.
  • If the cap has a retaining tether, use your hand to unclip or slide the tether from its holder on the fuel door area.
  • Set the old cap aside on a clean shop towel.

Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck

  • Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe the top sealing surface of the fuel filler neck.
  • Do not push dirt into the filler opening.
  • Look for cracks, rust, dents, or heavy dirt where the cap seal contacts the filler neck.
  • A clean sealing surface prevents EVAP leaks.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • If the new fuel cap has a tether, use your hand to attach the tether to the fuel door holder the same way the old one was attached.
  • Place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
  • Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue turning until you hear at least one clear click.
  • No torque spec applies because this cap is hand-tightened by its built-in ratchet mechanism.
  • One click is usually enough.

Step 5: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to swing the fuel door closed.
  • Press the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.

โœ… After Repair

  • โœ… Start your Accord and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • โœ… If the check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off by itself.
  • โœ… A drive cycle means a normal trip where the car warms up, is driven, and then cools down.
  • ๐Ÿ” If the check engine light stays on after several days of normal driving, scan for diagnostic trouble codes to check for another EVAP system leak.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$120 (parts + labor/diagnostic time)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours if diagnosis or code clearing is included.
