Step-by-step DIY guide with required part, safety tips, EVAP leak notes, and cost savings
🔧 Canyon - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Canyon is one of the easiest DIY repairs. A worn or loose fuel cap can trigger an evaporative emissions leak warning, often causing a check engine light or “tighten gas cap” type message.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🚭 Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel filler area.
- 🧯 Work in a well-ventilated area because fuel vapors can be flammable.
- 🧤 Wear nitrile gloves if you are sensitive to fuel residue.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Canyon on level ground and shut the engine off.
- 🔥 Let the vehicle sit for a few minutes if it was just driven, especially in hot weather.
- 📍 Open the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
- 💡 If your check engine light is on for an EVAP leak, the light may not turn off immediately after replacing the cap. The vehicle may need a few drive cycles to retest the system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel door on the driver-side rear of your Canyon.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses before touching the fuel cap area.
- Keep sparks and flames away.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases.
- A tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached to the truck so it does not get lost.
- If your replacement cap includes a new tether, use your hand to unclip the old tether from the fuel door or filler area.
- No torque spec applies. The cap is hand-tightened only.
Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use your eyes to inspect the metal fuel filler neck where the cap seals.
- Look for dirt, rust, cracks, or damaged sealing surfaces.
- If you see loose dirt, wipe it gently with a clean dry cloth before installing the new cap.
- Do not push debris into the filler opening.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck.
- Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
- For your Canyon, tighten until you hear at least one clear click. This confirms the cap has reached its built-in tightening limit.
- Torque to hand-tight only; do not use pliers or tools.
- One click is usually enough.
Step 5: Secure the Tether
- If the new cap has a tether, use your hand to clip the tether back into the original mounting point.
- Make sure the tether is not pinched between the cap and the fuel door.
Step 6: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the bedside.
- Check that the fuel door does not press hard against the cap or tether.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Canyon and check that there is no fuel smell around the filler area.
- 🧠 If the check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking cap, it may turn off after several normal drive cycles.
- 🔍 If the check engine light stays on after a few days of driving, scan for diagnostic trouble codes. An EVAP leak can also come from hoses, purge valve, vent valve, or the charcoal canister.
- ⛽ After your next refuel, tighten the cap until it clicks every time.
