- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Traverse on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition completely off.
- If the Check Engine light is on, the light may not turn off immediately after replacing the cap. The vehicle may need several drive cycles to retest the EVAP system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to press and open the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Work slowly; plastic parts can crack.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it is fully loose.
- Pull the cap away from the filler neck. The filler neck is the metal tube where fuel goes into the tank.
- If the cap has a tether, gently pull the tether end off its retaining point by hand.
Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use your eyes to check the sealing surface around the filler neck.
- Look for dirt, cracks, rust, or old rubber stuck to the opening.
- If dirty, wipe the area gently with a clean dry cloth.
- Do not push debris into the filler neck.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap
- If your replacement fuel cap has a tether, attach the tether to the original retaining point by hand.
- Place the new fuel cap straight onto the filler neck.
- Use your hand to turn the fuel cap clockwise until it clicks.
- Continue until you hear at least one clear click. This means the cap is sealed correctly.
- No torque wrench is used for this part; hand-tighten only.
Step 5: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door until it latches flush with the body.
- Check that the fuel cap tether is not pinched by the fuel door.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Traverse and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If the Check Engine light was caused by a loose or bad cap, it may turn off after several normal drives.
- If the Check Engine light stays on after a few days of driving, have the EVAP codes scanned.
- Always tighten the cap until it clicks after every fuel fill-up.
