📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Colorado on level ground.
• 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
• ⛽ Make sure the fuel door area is clean so dirt does not fall near the filler neck.
• 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves. Nitrile gloves protect your hands from fuel residue.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear side of your Colorado.
• Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt from around the fuel cap and filler area.
• Keep dirt out of the filler neck.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
• If the cap has a tether, inspect how it attaches before removing it. The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap from getting lost.
• Use your hand to unclip the tether from the fuel door area if your replacement cap includes a new tether.
• No torque spec applies because the cap tightens by hand until it clicks.

Step 3: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck

• Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe the sealing surface where the cap gasket touches.
• Look for cracks, rust, heavy dirt, or damage around the filler neck opening.
• Do not push the towel down into the filler neck.
• A clean seal helps prevent EVAP leaks.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to attach the new tether to the fuel door area if equipped.
• Place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
• Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
• Continue turning until you hear at least one clear click.
• Torque to hand-tight only until the cap clicks.

Step 5: Close the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
• Make sure the fuel door sits flush with the body.

• ✅ Start your Colorado and check that the fuel door area is secure.
• ✅ If the check engine light was on because of a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off by itself.
• ✅ A drive cycle means the truck is driven, parked, cooled down, and started again under normal conditions.
