This is an easy five-minute job. Replace the cap if its seal is cracked, the tether is broken, or a loose-cap warning keeps returning.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your Ascent on level ground, select Park, and switch off the engine.
• 🚪 Unlock the vehicle, then press the rear edge of the fuel door to open it.
• 🔍 Compare the new cap’s threads, sealing gasket, and tether attachment with the original.
• 🧼 Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove dirt around the filler opening. Don’t push debris into the neck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Original Cap

• Wear nitrile gloves and turn the fuel cap counterclockwise by hand.
• Continue turning until the cap separates from the filler neck.
• Inspect the filler-neck threads and sealing surface for damage or debris.

Step 2: Disconnect the Tether

• Locate the plastic tether connection inside the fuel-door area.
• Use the plastic trim tool to gently release the tether retainer.
• Don’t pry against painted metal or pull hard on the fuel-door hinge.
• Take a photo before releasing the tether.

Step 3: Attach the New Tether

• Press the replacement cap’s tether retainer into the original mounting point by hand.
• If needed, use the plastic trim tool to guide the retainer without forcing it.
• Lightly pull the tether to confirm that it’s fully seated.

Step 4: Install the New Cap

• Place the cap squarely against the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
• Continue turning until the cap clicks. No torque wrench is used.
• Don’t use pliers or apply excessive force. The cap must seal while still being removable by hand.

Step 5: Check Operation

• Unscrew and reinstall the cap once to confirm smooth thread engagement.
• Make sure the tether doesn’t bind, twist, or interfere with the fuel door.
• Close the fuel door and press its edge to verify that it latches flush.

✅ After Repair

• ✅ Start your Ascent and verify that no fuel warning appears.
• ⏳ If a loose-cap or check-engine warning was already present, reinstalling the correct cap may not clear it immediately. The vehicle may need several normal drive cycles.
• 🔍 If the warning returns, inspect the filler neck and have the EVAP system checked. EVAP means the system that contains and monitors fuel vapors.
• 👃 Stop and investigate immediately if you smell strong fuel vapor or see liquid fuel.
