Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to open the fuel filler door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
• Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt away from the fuel cap and filler neck area. The filler neck is the metal tube where fuel goes into the tank.
• Keep dirt out of the tank.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases.
• If the cap has a tether, pull the cap outward and check how the tether is attached.
• Use your hand to unclip or slide the tether off its retaining point if the replacement cap includes a new tether.
• No torque spec applies; this part is hand-tightened only.

Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck

• Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe the sealing surface on the filler neck.
• Look for rust, cracks, dents, or stuck pieces of the old cap seal.
• If the sealing surface is damaged, the new cap may not seal correctly.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
• Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
• Keep turning until you hear at least one clear click, then stop.
• Torque to hand-tight only; do not use tools.

Step 5: Secure the Tether

• Use your hand to attach the tether to the original retaining point if your replacement cap includes one.
• Make sure the tether does not get pinched when the fuel door closes.

Step 6: Close the Fuel Door
