🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

• Use your hand to open the fuel door on the driver side rear quarter panel.
• Use a flashlight if it’s dark so you can clearly see the cap and sealing area.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

• Put on nitrile gloves to keep fuel smell off your hands.
• Turn the cap counterclockwise (left) until it releases, then pull it off.
• If your cap has a tether (a small strap that keeps it attached), let it hang so it doesn’t scratch paint.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces

• Use a flashlight to inspect the rubber seal on the old cap and the filler neck lip (the metal ring where the cap seals).
• Wipe the filler neck sealing lip with a clean shop towel to remove dust or grit. Clean seals prevent EVAP leaks.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

• Align the new cap on the filler neck and turn it clockwise (right) by hand.
• Tighten until you feel/hear it click several times; this is the cap’s built-in clutch that sets proper tightness.
• Close the fuel door firmly with your hand.

Step 5: If you had a “Loose Fuel Cap” message or Check Engine light

• Drive normally for a few trips; the EVAP system may need a few drive cycles to re-check itself.
• If the light/message doesn’t clear after a few days of driving, the issue may be a different EVAP leak (not just the cap).
