How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2018 Hyundai Sonata
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required parts, tools, safety tips, and leak checks
🔧 Sonata - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a simple job. A new cap restores the seal that keeps fuel vapor contained and can correct a loose-cap warning or an evaporative-emissions leak.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Switch off the engine and keep cigarettes, flames, and sparks away.
- 🧤 Avoid touching spilled fuel; wash exposed skin immediately.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Small plastic trim-removal tool
- Fuel-resistant nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Sonata outdoors on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
- ⛽ Confirm that the replacement cap has the correct sealing gasket and tether.
- 📱 No infotainment menu, scan tool, or battery-disconnect procedure is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Wear the fuel-resistant nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Make sure the driver’s door is unlocked, then press the rear edge of the fuel door and allow it to open.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Hold the old cap by hand and turn it counterclockwise until it releases from the filler neck.
- Let the cap hang only if its tether is still secure.
- Open slowly if tank pressure is audible.
Step 3: Release the Tether
- Locate the plastic tether retainer attached inside the fuel-door area.
- Use the small plastic trim-removal tool to gently lift or release the retainer without bending the fuel door.
- Remove the old cap and tether together. Do not use a metal screwdriver near the painted surface.
Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use the safety glasses and visually inspect the filler-neck sealing surface.
- Remove loose dirt with a clean section of the fuel-resistant nitrile glove. Do not push debris into the tank.
- Stop if the filler neck is cracked, heavily rusted, or visibly distorted.
Step 5: Install the New Tether
- Position the new tether retainer in the same mounting point and orientation as the original.
- Use the small plastic trim-removal tool to press the retainer into place until fully seated.
- Pull gently on the tether by hand to verify that it is secure and does not interfere with the fuel door.
Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the cap squarely onto the filler neck by hand.
- Turn it clockwise until one clear click is heard. No torque wrench or separate torque specification is used.
- Place the tether so it will not become pinched, then close the fuel door until it latches.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Reopen the fuel door and verify that the cap remains tight and the tether is secure.
- 🚗 If a loose-cap message was present, drive normally after installation; it may take several trips for the evaporative-emissions monitor to retest the system.
- ⚠️ If the check-engine light remains on, the evaporative system may have another leak requiring a diagnostic scan and smoke test.
