- Use a clean shop towel to wipe dust around the fuel door area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Press the fuel door release area (or open the door by hand if your Elantra’s door is push-to-open).
- Wipe around the filler neck with a clean shop towel.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes free.
- If the cap is tethered, let it hang by the tether (the strap that keeps it attached). Don’t twist the tether.
Step 3: Check the sealing surface
- Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe the filler neck lip (where the cap seals).
- Make sure there’s no sand, rust flakes, or damaged plastic on the sealing area.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
- Tighten until it clicks. Tighten to: clicks fully engaged (hand-tight)
- If it does not click, remove it and start again to avoid cross-threading (crooked threads).
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door firmly until it latches.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Elantra and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the rear of the car.
- If you had a check-engine light for an EVAP/fuel cap issue, it may take a few normal drive cycles to clear on its own.
- If the light stays on after a few days of driving, you’ll likely need the stored code read (often EVAP-related).
