📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Fit on level ground and turn the engine off.
• Set the parking brake.
• Make sure the area around the fuel door is clean so dirt does not fall near the filler neck.
• A fuel filler neck is the metal tube where the fuel cap seals after you fill the tank.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear side of your Fit.
• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
• If the cap has a tether strap, gently unhook or slide the tether off its retaining point by hand.
• Do not force the tether. It is only plastic and can snap.
• Turn slowly to avoid damage.

Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck

• Use a clean shop towel to wipe the sealing surface around the fuel filler neck.
• Look for dirt, rust, fuel residue, or pieces of the old cap seal.
• If the filler neck sealing surface is dirty, wipe it clean before installing the new cap.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap

• If equipped, attach the new cap tether to the original retaining point by hand.
• Place the new fuel filler cap squarely onto the filler neck.
• Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
• On your Fit, tighten the cap until you hear at least one clear click.
• No torque wrench is used for this part. The clicking mechanism controls the tightness.

Step 5: Close the Fuel Door

• Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
• Make sure the tether does not get pinched between the door and the body.

✅ After Repair

• Start your Fit and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
• If the check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off by itself.
• A drive cycle means starting, driving, parking, and letting the vehicle run its normal emissions self-checks.
• If the warning light stays on after several days of normal driving, have the diagnostic trouble codes scanned.
