🔧 F-150 - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your F-150 is a simple beginner-friendly job. The fuel cap seals the fuel filler neck so fuel vapors stay contained and the evaporative emissions system can monitor pressure correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, or hot surfaces.
  • ⚠️ Do not use metal tools near the open fuel filler neck.
  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off before opening the fuel door.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Let the area around the fuel door dry if the truck was recently washed or driven in rain.
  • If the check engine light is on for an EVAP leak, replacing the cap may fix it, but the light may take several drive cycles to clear.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the side of the bed.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Fuel vapors can irritate eyes.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it is free.
  • If your cap has a tether, inspect where it clips to the fuel door area.
  • A tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap from being lost.

Step 3: Remove the Tether if Equipped

  • Use your hand to unclip the tether from its mounting point.
  • If it is tight, use a clean shop towel for grip and gently pull the tether loop off the peg.
  • Do not pry with a screwdriver near the filler neck.

Step 4: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck

  • Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe dirt from the outer sealing surface.
  • Do not push the towel into the filler neck.
  • Check that the sealing surface is smooth and not cracked, rusty, or packed with dirt.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • If equipped, use your hand to attach the new tether to the same mounting point.
  • Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck.
  • Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue turning until you hear at least one firm click.
  • One firm click means sealed.

Step 6: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
  • Make sure the tether is not pinched between the fuel door and body.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your F-150 and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If the check engine light was on, drive normally for a few trips. The evaporative emissions monitor may need time to retest the seal.
  • If the check engine light stays on after several drive cycles, the issue may be another EVAP system leak, not the cap.
  • No scan tool reset is required for a normal fuel cap replacement.
