How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2018 Ford Expedition Easy Fuel System
Step-by-step guide for installing a capless fuel filler plug or lockable cap safely
🔧 Expedition - Fuel Cap Replacement
Your Expedition uses Ford’s capless Easy Fuel filler system, so there is no traditional screw-on fuel cap from the factory. If you are replacing a missing/damaged aftermarket lockable cap, dust plug, or fuel filler door insert, the job is simple and usually requires no disassembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames, cigarettes, or hot surfaces.
- ⚠️ Do not force tools into the capless filler neck; the internal spring-loaded doors can be damaged.
- ⚠️ Do not disconnect the battery for this repair.
- ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel vapor or see liquid fuel, stop and inspect for a fuel filler neck or EVAP system leak.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Expedition on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🧯 Turn the engine off and keep keys away from the vehicle while working near the fuel filler.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- 📌 Ford Easy Fuel means the filler neck has spring-loaded internal doors instead of a screw-on gas cap.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Filler Door
- Use your hand to press and release the rear edge of the fuel filler door.
- Let the door swing fully open.
- No tools needed here.
Step 2: Inspect the Filler Area
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe dirt away from the filler opening and surrounding pocket.
- Look inside the filler neck opening without pushing anything deep into it.
- Confirm the spring-loaded Easy Fuel flap is sitting flat and not stuck open.
Step 3: Remove the Old Plug or Aftermarket Cap
- If a dust plug is installed, pull it straight out by hand.
- If a lockable cap is installed, unlock it with its key, then pull it straight out by hand.
- If the plug is stuck, use a plastic trim tool gently around the outer edge only. A plastic trim tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps avoid scratching or damaging trim.
- Do not use screwdrivers or metal picks inside the filler neck.
Step 4: Clean the Opening
- Use a clean microfiber towel to remove dust from the outer filler pocket.
- Do not push the towel deep into the spring-loaded filler doors.
- If the area is wet with fuel, wait for vapors to clear before installing the new part.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Filler Plug or Cap
- Line up the new capless fuel filler dust plug or lockable fuel cap with the filler opening.
- Push it straight in by hand until it seats evenly.
- If it is a lockable cap, turn the key to lock it and gently tug the cap to confirm it is secure.
- No torque spec applies because this part is hand-installed only.
Step 6: Close the Fuel Filler Door
- Use your hand to swing the fuel filler door closed.
- Press until it clicks flush with the body.
- Make sure the door does not rub or stay partly open.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Expedition and check that no fuel warning or check engine light appears.
- ✅ If the check engine light was already on for an EVAP leak, it may take several drive cycles to clear after the issue is fixed.
- ✅ If a warning returns, inspect the capless filler door seal, filler neck, and EVAP system instead of replacing the plug again.
- ✅ At your next refuel, make sure the pump nozzle inserts smoothly and the Easy Fuel flap closes afterward.
