🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

• Use a gloved hand to press and release the rear edge of the fuel door.
• Open the door fully without forcing its hinge.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

• Use a gloved hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases from the filler neck.
• Inspect the filler opening for dirt or damage. Do not allow debris to enter the tank.

Step 3: Release the Retaining Tether

• Locate the plastic tether attachment on the inside of the fuel-door area.
• Use the small plastic trim tool to gently release the tether retainer from its mounting hole or slot.
• A trim tool is a thin plastic lever that releases clips without scratching paint.
• Do not pull hard on the fuel door or bend its hinge.

Step 4: Clean and Inspect the Filler Neck

• Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe the cap-sealing surface around the filler neck.
• Check that the sealing surface is smooth and free of rust, dents, or hardened fuel residue.
• Do not apply grease, oil, or sealant to the cap seal.

Step 5: Attach the New Tether

• Use a gloved hand to press the new tether retainer into the same mounting hole or slot.
• Pull gently on the tether to verify that it is secure.
• Confirm that the tether does not interfere with the fuel-door hinge.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

• Place the cap squarely against the filler neck using a gloved hand.
• Turn the cap clockwise until it ratchets and produces at least one clear click.
• No separate torque wrench setting is used; the cap’s ratcheting mechanism controls tightening.
• Stop after it clicks; extra force is unnecessary.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

• Use a gloved hand to place the cap inside the fuel-door pocket without trapping the tether.
• Close the fuel door and press its rear edge until it latches flush with the body.

• ✅ Start the engine and verify that no fuel warning appears.
• 🛣️ If “Tighten Gas Cap” or the check-engine light was already on, it may require several normal driving cycles to clear after the EVAP system completes its self-test.
