How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2017 Toyota Highlander
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required parts, tools, safety tips, and seal checks
🔧 Highlander - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Highlander is a simple repair. A damaged seal or cap can allow fuel vapor to escape and may turn on the check-engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔥 Park outdoors away from flames, cigarettes, sparks, and hot equipment.
- 🧤 Avoid touching spilled fuel and wash exposed skin immediately.
- ⛽ Do not insert tools into the filler neck.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nylon trim-removal tool (specialty)
- Nitrile fuel-resistant gloves
- ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
- Clean microfiber cloth
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel filler cap with sealing gasket and tether - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground, shift into Park, engage the parking brake, and switch the engine off.
- 🌡️ Let the vehicle cool if it was recently driven.
- 🔍 Compare the new cap with the original. The seal, threads, and tether attachment must match.
- 🧰 A nylon trim-removal tool is a nonmetal pry tool that removes plastic clips without scratching paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Press and release the rear edge of the fuel door by hand.
- Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile fuel-resistant gloves.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Turn the old cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases from the filler neck.
- Wait a few seconds if you hear pressure escaping, then finish removing the cap.
- Do not use pliers because they can damage the filler neck.
Step 3: Disconnect the Tether
- Locate the small plastic tether retainer attached to the fuel-door area.
- Use the nylon trim-removal tool to gently lift the retainer from its mounting hole.
- Support the retainer while prying so it does not break or scratch the painted surface.
- Work slowly; aged plastic clips can become brittle.
Step 4: Inspect and Clean the Filler Neck
- Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe only the cap-sealing surface around the filler opening.
- Check for dirt, rust, dents, or damage that could prevent the new gasket from sealing.
- Keep the cloth and all debris out of the filler neck.
Step 5: Install the New Tether
- Align the new tether retainer with the original mounting hole.
- Press it firmly into place by hand until it sits securely.
- If needed, use the flat face of the nylon trim-removal tool to press the retainer evenly. Do not strike it.
Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the new cap squarely onto the filler neck.
- Turn the cap clockwise by hand until it clicks once or more.
- No torque wrench is required; the cap’s internal ratchet controls tightening force.
- Place the tether inside without pinching it, then close the fuel door securely.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Pull gently on the cap to verify that it is locked and properly seated.
- 🔍 Check that the fuel door closes without trapping the tether.
- 🚗 If a loose-cap warning was present, drive normally. It may clear after several complete driving cycles.
- ⚠️ If the check-engine light remains on, the evaporative-emissions system may have another leak. A scan tool should be used to read the stored diagnostic code before replacing more parts.
