How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2016 Jeep Renegade (Fix EVAP Leak & Check Engine Light)
Step-by-step fuel cap replacement with tools, parts, safety tips, and what to do if the CEL returns
🔧 Renegade - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick job that helps keep your evaporative emissions system (EVAP) sealed. A bad cap can cause a fuel smell, a loose-cap message, or a check engine light from a small leak.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work outside or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
- ⚠️ Do not top-off after the pump clicks off; it can damage EVAP components.
- ⚠️ Engine OFF while replacing the cap.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Clean shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the engine OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- If you’re replacing the cap due to a check engine light, note that the light may take a few drive cycles to clear after the leak is fixed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Use your hand to open the fuel door on the rear quarter panel.
- Use a flashlight to confirm you’re looking at the fuel cap and the filler neck opening.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then pull it straight off.
- If your cap has a tether (a small retaining strap), let it hang without twisting it.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces
- Use a flashlight to inspect the filler neck sealing lip for dirt, rust, or damage.
- Wipe the sealing lip with a clean shop towel. Clean and dry is best.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Place the new cap squarely on the filler neck.
- Turn it clockwise until it is fully seated and clicks.
- Keep turning until you get at least 1 click (2 clicks is fine). Clicks mean the seal is tight.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door firmly by hand until it latches.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there’s no “loose gas cap” message (if your A4 has one, it may take a short drive to update).
- Drive normally for a few days; if the check engine light was on for an EVAP small leak, it may clear after multiple cold-start drive cycles.
- If the light returns, the issue may be the filler neck seal, purge valve, leak detection pump, or an EVAP hose—not the cap.
