š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap (capless conversion not used) - Qty: 1
- Fuel cap tether/retainer (if damaged) - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
- If you just drove, wait a few minutes so any tank pressure can bleed off slowly.
- Open the fuel door and have a shop towel ready to wipe the filler neck area.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap
- Open the fuel door.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then remove it by hand (use nitrile gloves).
- If thereās dirt around the opening, wipe the sealing area with a shop towel.
Step 2: Inspect the sealing surfaces
- Use a flashlight to look at the filler neck lip (the round sealing surface).
- Make sure thereās no grit, rust flakes, or damage where the cap seals.
- Check the old capās rubber seal (the gasket). If itās cracked, flattened, or missing, replacement was needed.
Step 3: Transfer/attach the tether (if equipped)
- If your Tucson has a tether (a small strap that keeps the cap attached), move it to the new cap if itās removable.
- If the tether clips into the cap, press it in by hand until it snaps in place.
- Donāt force the clip; align it first.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Place the new cap on the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
- Keep turning until you feel/hear it click and stop tightening after it clicks. (That āclickā is the capās built-in limiter so you donāt over-tighten.)
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Make sure the cap sits flat and the tether (if present) isnāt pinched.
- Close the fuel door fully.
ā After Repair
- Start your Tucson and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If you had a check engine light for a loose cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- If the light stays on after a few days of mixed driving, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system and should be scanned for codes.
