🔧 Impala - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick repair. A worn seal or loose cap can allow fuel vapor to escape and may trigger a check-engine light or a “Tighten Gas Cap” message.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
Assumption: The replacement cap includes a new tether.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔥 Switch the engine off and keep flames, cigarettes, and sparks away.
- ⚠️ Do not perform this repair while the Impala is being refueled.
- 🧤 Avoid touching spilled fuel; wash exposed skin immediately.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
- Nitrile mechanic gloves
- ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses
- Clean microfiber cloth
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel tank filler cap with tether - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park the Impala outdoors on level ground, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the engine off.
- ⏳ Wait a few minutes if the vehicle was recently driven.
- 🔍 Compare the new cap with the old cap. The seal, threads, and tether attachment should match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Press and release the rear edge of the fuel door by hand.
- Put on the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Turn the old cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases from the filler neck.
- Allow any slight vapor pressure to escape before fully lifting the cap away.
- Do not insert tools or cloth into the filler neck.
Step 3: Release the Cap Tether
- Locate the small tether anchor attached to the fuel-door area.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently lift the tether anchor from its mounting hole.
- A trim tool is a smooth plastic lever that removes clips without scratching paint.
- Do not force or twist the painted fuel door.
- Support the door while releasing the tether.
Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use the clean microfiber cloth to wipe only the outer sealing surface of the filler neck.
- Check that the sealing surface is clean, smooth, and free of rust or damage.
- Do not let dirt or cloth fibers enter the tank opening.
Step 5: Install the New Tether
- Align the new tether anchor with the original mounting hole.
- Press the anchor into place by hand until it sits securely.
- Lightly pull the tether by hand to confirm the anchor will not come out.
Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the new cap squarely against the filler neck.
- Turn the cap clockwise by hand until it clicks.
- Continue until at least one clear click is heard; no torque wrench is required because the cap has a built-in ratcheting mechanism.
- Give the cap a gentle counterclockwise check by hand. It should remain locked.
Step 7: Close the Fuel Door
- Arrange the tether so it does not become trapped between the fuel door and body.
- Press the fuel door closed by hand until it sits flush with the body.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the Impala and confirm the fuel cap or warning message is no longer displayed.
- 🚗 If the check-engine light was caused only by the loose or leaking cap, it may require several normal driving trips to switch off automatically.
- ⚠️ If the warning remains after several trips, the evaporative-emissions system should be scanned for diagnostic trouble codes and leak-tested.
- 👃 Stop and inspect the cap immediately if you notice a persistent fuel smell.
