🔧 Wrangler - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Wrangler is one of the easiest DIY repairs. A worn or loose fuel cap can cause fuel vapor leaks and may trigger a check engine light or EVAP leak code.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames, cigarettes, sparks, or hot tools.
- ⚠️ Do not replace the cap while refueling or with fuel spilled around the filler neck.
- ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel vapor after replacement, stop and inspect the cap seal and filler neck.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean microfiber cloth
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Locking or non-locking fuel cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on level ground and turn the engine off.
- 🔑 Remove the ignition key and keep it away from the vehicle while working.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses before touching the fuel filler area.
- 🧼 Make sure the area around the fuel filler is clean so dirt does not enter the tank.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel filler door on the left rear side of your Wrangler.
- Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe dust or dirt away from the fuel cap area.
- Keep dirt out of the tank.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
- If your Wrangler has a tether, which is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached, gently slide or unclip the tether from its mount by hand.
- Do not use pliers or pry tools on the filler neck because it can damage the sealing surface.
Step 3: Inspect the Filler Neck
- Use a clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe the flat sealing surface where the cap gasket sits.
- Look for rust, cracks, dents, or stuck rubber from the old cap seal.
- If the filler neck sealing surface is damaged, the new cap may not seal correctly.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
- Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks several times.
- The clicking sound means the cap has reached its built-in tightening limit; no torque wrench is used for this part.
- Torque to hand-tight until multiple clicks are heard
Step 5: Reattach the Tether
- If the new cap includes a tether, use your hand to attach it to the fuel door or filler housing in the same location as the old one.
- Make sure the tether does not get pinched when the fuel door closes.
Step 6: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
- Make sure it sits flush with the body and does not rub the tether or cap.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Wrangler and check that there is no strong fuel smell around the left rear filler area.
- ✅ If the check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- ✅ A drive cycle means the vehicle is driven, parked, cooled down, and driven again while the computer retests the EVAP system.
- ✅ If the check engine light stays on after several days, scan for codes; common fuel-cap-related codes include small EVAP leak codes.
