๐Ÿ”ง CX-5 - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your CX-5 is one of the easiest DIY repairs. A worn, loose, cracked, or missing fuel cap can trigger an EVAP system leak code and may turn on the check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Do this repair with the engine off and away from open flames, cigarettes, heaters, or sparks.
  • ๐Ÿงค Fuel vapors can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • โ›ฝ Do not overfill the tank after replacing the cap; stop fueling when the pump clicks off the first time.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim tool

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground in a well-ventilated area.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the engine off and keep the key fob away from the start button area.
  • Let the vehicle sit for a minute before opening the fuel door so fuel vapors can settle.
  • A plastic trim tool is a soft pry tool that helps release clips without scratching paint or plastic.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to press the rear edge of the fuel door inward, then release it.
  • The fuel door should pop open.
  • If it sticks, use a plastic trim tool gently at the edge of the fuel door. Do not use a metal screwdriver because it can damage the paint.
  • Press gently to avoid dents.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes loose.
  • Pull the cap away from the filler neck.
  • There is no torque spec for removal because the cap is hand-tightened only.

Step 3: Detach the Fuel Cap Tether

  • Look at the small plastic strap connected to the old fuel cap. This is the tether, which keeps the cap from falling away during refueling.
  • Use your hand to unclip the tether from the fuel door area if it has a removable clip.
  • If the tether clip is snug, use a plastic trim tool to gently lift the clip free.
  • Do not twist or force the fuel door hinge.

Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck

  • Use your eyes to check the metal filler neck opening for dirt, damage, or stuck rubber pieces from the old cap seal.
  • Do not push anything into the filler neck.
  • If you see loose debris on the outer rim, wipe only the outside sealing surface by hand with a clean glove.
  • Keep dirt out of the tank.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

  • Position the new cap tether in the same place as the old one.
  • Push the tether clip into place by hand until it seats fully.
  • If needed, use a plastic trim tool to gently guide the clip into the slot.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck by hand.
  • Turn the cap clockwise by hand until it clicks.
  • Keep turning until you hear at least one firm click.
  • Torque to hand-tight only; stop after the cap clicks.
  • Do not use pliers or any other tool to tighten the cap.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to swing the fuel door closed.
  • Press the fuel door gently until it latches flush with the body.
  • Make sure the tether is not pinched between the fuel door and body.

โœ… After Repair

  • Start your CX-5 and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If the check engine light was on from a loose or faulty cap, it may take several normal drive cycles to turn off by itself.
  • If the light stays on after several days of driving, the EVAP system may need a scan for stored trouble codes.
  • At your next fuel stop, tighten the cap until it clicks after fueling.
